Not necessarily . You may need a new heater control ( tap ) so that the hot water can flow through the core of the heater. The core fins can be cleaned out with a vacuum cleaner.

SOURCE: 2001 Dodge Caravan heater blows cold air when stopped

Have you checked the coolant level? What you describe is exactly what happens if the coolant level is low. When stopped at idle, hot coolant is not circulating through the heater core, so no heat. As the engine increases in rpm's when you pull away from the light, the water pump is spinning quicker, and some coolant is making it to the heater core. So check the level, and if it is low, keep an eye on it to see if it drops again. That of course indicates a leak somewhere. Get it fixed, as overheating the engine leads to costly repairs and worse case a new engine. Let me know how you make out with this.

Why does my jetta a/c work the not work

Happy New Year. My name is Phil. My heater for my VW Jetta 1999 2.0 automatic doesn't work. The blower works but not hot air. Blows dirt and part of foam. Did I need a new heater? Or is there something else wrong? Also a clagging sound when I turn the car on but once the car is warmed up the clagging sound stops. The car runs good but worry about the clagging sound. Thanks.

I have a 1997 jetta with 2.0 motor. my heating systems blows air but its cold. is there a flap that needs to be moved or is the core bad?

with the car at operating temp grab the heater hoses they should be hot to the touch and the same temperature.if not then the heater core is probably plugged and will need replacing.if they are the same temp then you may have a heat door inside the car that is not moving far enough to shut off cold air and allow hot air into the car.

Under the hood on top of the firewall you will see two hoses, check both of these are hot(the cooler one is the matrix return pipe)if return pipe is cold then undo the clip and vent off any trapped air.this must be done when the engine is HOT,so take care.........

I would change the Thermostat. if that doesn't fix it? I would buy a Radiator flush and follow the directions exactly you will be surprised how much junk comes out. That should fix all your heat problems.

you do not need a new heater core, you need to replace the thermostat control on your dash. the one that goes from blue to red.

A/c in jetta blows hot air, its been charged, compressor comes on.

you need to have it diagnosed by a professional. These are complicated systems even to a trained tech. You may be over or under charged, have a clogged expansion valve, have a leak or many other issues. This model has a rcv refrigerant control valve inside the compressor which regulates the pressure of the compressor. If you notice the compressor never shuts off like conventional auto a/c's do the only time the clutch works is when you turn it on or off. Can be complicated.

My 2000 jetta gl is overheating the thermastat is good and the fans work but when you turn on the heater only cold air blows

sounds like your cooling system isn't full.  with the heater on Hi refill the cooling system and bleed it until all the air comes out.  Sometimes you need to raise the front of the car.  And there may be a bleed screw on the thermostat housing.
