Signal lights on 2001 Ford Focus do not turn off after making a turn. I need to turn them off manually.

The problem is in the turn/multifunction switch. It has a couple plastic tabs that ride behind the steering wheel and once the wheel is turned the tabs are released which turns your signal lights off. This requires a puller to remove the steering wheel and make sure to disconnect the battery--you will have to remove the airbag first and dont want any accidents. Once the battery is disconnected the airbag will not deploy. Probably best to have a certified tech perform this repair. I would estimate the cost of parts and labor around $300.

How to change the turn signal/wiper on the steering column

Its not to bad of a job. But there are some special tools involed. You will need to remove the steering wheel. Then the air bag coil. then the steering lock plate. Then the switch is just bolted on to the colume with torx 20 screws. There is a special tool to remove the steering wheel, it is called a bolt grip puller. There is a special tool to compress the steering lock plate to be able to remove the retainer to take it off. A simple pair of snap ring pliers will get your air bag coil off. Sounds like a big job but not bad at all if you have the tools. If you never plan on doing it again. I may be cheaper to have some one with tools do it compaired to going out and buying tools you may never use again.

Changing steering wheel on a 2006 Focus

You need to disconnect the battery and the airbag diagnostic control module in the dash, do not remove the airbag until this is done, if it goes off you will have a really bad day.

Loose steering wheel

Disconnect negative battery cable(10mm).
Insert key and rotate steering wheel until one of the mounting bolts for the airbag are visible from the backside (7/32 or 5.5 mm).Unscrew and rotate 180 degrees until the other is visible.Pry airbag off with a small screwdriver (being very careful) release yellow connector and place airbag aside with leather or vinyl pointing up.
Use a 24mm socket and tighten to 37 ft.pounds.
Reverse procedure to re-install airbag.
Connect cable and remember the computer will have to relearn its settings so car may run different for a while..

This is a bit of a task, so I hope you're feeling brave! And I'm doing this from memory so bear with me!

First of all, disconnect the battery negative lead and then have a cup of coffee for 20 mins or so to give the airbag a chance to disarm.

Next, remove the upper and lower steering column plastic cowelling, unplug the airbag wiring, and then put the key in the ignition and release the steering lock.

Now, look at the back of the steering wheel around where the steering columnn goes in or thereabouts. You should see a number of bolts or screws which can be accessed one at a time by turning the steering wheel to bring each one into view. These are holding the airbag unit onto the steering wheel.

Undo and remove them all and then VERY CAREFULLY remove the airbag unit from the front of the steering wheel, and carry it with the airbag facing AWAY from you, and put it somwhere safe, FACE UP.

You should now have access to the steering wheel nut and its straight forward from here on, but remember, you will no longer have a drivers airbag, and you may need to have the light put out when the ECU realises you have removed the airbag.

Very best regards
