You should have a serpentine belt. You will see a pulley that attaches to a bracket. This pulley is spring mounted so it keeps the proper tension on the belt at all times. You will need to use a 3/8 drive ratchet or breaker bar to insert in to the square slot to pull the tensioner pulley back to remove the belt.

1992 4.0l. how can I replace fan belt?

Your vehicle has a "tensioner" under the hood as a separate pulley for the serpentine belt to ride on.
If you want to see a picture of it, go to "e-bay" and type in "92 Explorer belt tensioner."
You will need a socket and a long bar, or a box-end wrench that is long to put on the bolt that is holding the pulley on.
You will rotate that pulley to loosen the serpentine belt to be removed.
You will also do the same to put on the new belt.
You may find they help of another person will be good.
God bless your efforts.

fan bealt is easy to change all you need to do is right down how the belt runs befor you start and then loosen the alatanator and move it closer to loosen the belt then remove the belt around the fan and replace just like you wrote down then use a bar to tighten the belt by prying the altaator away from the motor but don't make it to tight then once tou have it as tight as you want tighten back the altanator and thats it

Serpentine Belt on a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2

If you have a book picture your are screwed. You do have a tensioner but it is between air con and powersteering pullys. In front from under you can put 15mm wrenchopend with a nother for leverage pull center bolt down to release tension. simple.
