Question about 2002 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

Instrument cluster doesn't work engine wont start

I have 2002 dodge caravan sport with a v6. The car dyes after it warms up and wont start. The instrument cluster malfunctions and then quits working when this happens. Only codes I get is drop in voltage because I disconnected the battery. Mechanic thinks it is the IPM but doesn't know. I cannot afford an IPM on a theory. The IPM is very expensive too. I am wondering if it could be anything else. When it does start it runs great until it warms up.

I dont know much about this engine and electrical problem but ive been looking around and found there are a lot of problems with this model this web site will tell you the list of complaints. 2002 Dodge Caravan problems I could be the IPM or a series of problems that have happened at the same time IE an electrical fault that could be an earthing problem (check engine bay earths) weak fuse holder or faulty fuse. fuses when heat up or old can become detached when they get hot and then when they cool down connect again. you would not see this as the fuse would look normal. it could also be a sensor and it will shut the engine down to stop further damage or environmental harm. these are co sensors cam/crank these if they have a fault will stop engine from running if they are weak or damaged co sensor it could be the heater is working inside but the signal is wrong but this also send info to the ecu to control the fuel and air mix and the air mix sensor is MAF this is on the intake for the air. if this fails it can stop engine. but also an ecu problem would result in this fault as well, electrics to the instrument panel this could be a damaged ignition switch (were key is inserted) or the relay if the fault happens and you dont hear a click when the ignition is turned on not started or it buzzes it will be the relay. the relay can go in 3 ways the relay works but does not have a good contact inside, the relay is working but the magnet is not catching (causes buzzing) or the relay is weak and works but over heats and disconnects this will turn the instruments panel off and can cause flickering. also turn the engine off. hope these help you locate the problem .

SOURCE: 97 Dodge Caravan Auto-Shutdown Problem

Been working on my dad's 97 Caravan longer then i can remember for things you mentioned and have been not able to get him to sell it.
I found that the electrical connections are prone to corrosion and have replaced lots of the wire and pin connection in the wire harness, thank god i have time on my hands.
The instrument panel where the wire harness connects, i found that the solder goes bad and i had to re solder the connector on the back side of the circuit board, where the harness goes so you need to remove the instrument panel from the dash,
Here is a link that can help you retrieve DTC codes and do research on your caravan. I'ld tell you everything what i needed to do to keep my dad's caravan running but that would be a novel. http://www.allpar.com/fix/stall.html

Good luck and keep me posted, glad to help you keep yours running too.

Speedo and tack lights dont work on 1998 v6 3.3 dodge caravan replace all fuses and lights instrument cluster looks ok ?

This is most likely in the cluster. It may have replacable bulbs in the back of it. If it does not, than it is a sealed system and the cluster needs to be replaced. Good news is you can put a used cluster in this van and you will not lose your miles.

Dash instruments go out 99 dodge caravan

The first thing to do is reach up (if possible) behind the cluster and make sure the plugs to it are fully inserted, push them in or remove and reinsert if possible to reach them. If that doesn't fix the problem the entire cluster must be removed and then sent out for repair to a shop that repair Chrysler electronics.

I have a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport. I need to swap out the engine, which is a 3.3 L V6. Do I have to drop it out the bottom or can I use a lift to take it out the top ?

You can only drop it plus its easy once the subframe is out it,plus it wont come out through the top(unless you take it apart)

Desparately looking for the fuse box in my wife 2002 caravan. nI can only find the one under the hood in the engine.... dash lights went out and can't find the fuse

There is no fuse specifically for the instrument cluster illumination lights. They are controlled by the BCM.

Is it only the instrument cluster that has no illumination or do the rest of the items like the radio and heat controls also loose there illumination lighting?

Dodge 2002 Grand Caravan V6 3.3 engine overheating/no cabin heat.

Replace the bad radiator hose first.  Second- get you special formulated anti-freeze dye from the auto store and pour it into the radiator.  Third- make sure you got all the air pockets out of your system, cause the coolant system won't work with air pockets in it.  Fourth- Check for leaks by looking for the colored dye.  If it's not the radiator hose, then could possibly be a pin hole in your radiator.  Would suggest replacing all the radiator hoses at the same time while you got the coolant system disconnected, cause you don't want to have to come back and replace another hose in a few months.

2002 Dodge caravan instrument cluster and signals are not working. All fuses are good.Help!

Well if you checked all of the fuses, then most likely the wire harness that is plugged into you gauge cluster from inside the dash either came loose or your gauges cluster is faulty and blew out. I would check to see if that wire harness came loose and if it didnt then your probably going to have to replace that whole gauge cluster. Check around on ebay then are pretty cheap on there.

Dush board lights and gauges start flickering

indeed a fun one..i suspect a floating ground (poor ground) near instrument cluster causing the anomalies.....headlight circuit and signals are different so this makes sense .... if not fixed the instrument cluster will finally smoke and need replaced i think ...good luck
