Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder
Revs up when shifting, manual transmission, like gas pedal is being held down while shifting. lasts about 1 or 2 seconds then will settle down. also noticed a strong rubbery burning smell, don't know if they are related but happened at same time. runs fine when in top gear, does not buck or hesitate, just revs when going through gears. are there any fluids which need checking? any help will be much appreciated.

How long have you driven on the nylon timing belt in the engine ?
What is the recommended distance before the timing belt needs replacement is it 100,000 kilometers ?
Also the bearings that the timing belt runs on may be worn out
Is there an adequate amount of oil in the engine ?
If the timing belt bearings are worn the timing belt gets hot and could cause that burning smell you mentioned .
Note if the timing belt breaks while the engine is running it could result in engine damage.

I just went through the same problem this year twice. My car started smoking some, and I notice a trial of fluid on the road both times. I'm not sure but my car problems may have started when I got my Transmission flushed.
My car has 100,000 miles and I drive my car pretty hard.
I was first told the torque converter went out. Then I was told the Fuel pump needed to be changed. After being without a car for threes months, I just brought a new transmission and had it shipped to the shop.
From researching online, I think the fragile "Wave spring" in the transmission needs to be replaced and the new version of the "Wave Spring" is a solid & thick metal ring.
Secondly, the Mechanic will need a alignment tool to put the transmission back together properly. The tool is called Sonnex or made by the company I think.
Let me know what you find out.
Also only use Transmission fluid for Mitsubishi Eclipse only.
1. Torque Converter
2. Transmission "Wave Spring" broken pieces of the wave spring may damage other parts as it flows through the system or the fuel pump I think.

Is this an automatic trans?Does this mean that it just revs in 1st or drive unti it goes into 2nd?Shifts are determined by having sufficient trans fluid in.That the internal valve body is functioning, that external shift solenoids are working, and that the speed sensor on the trans as well as the TPS on the throttle body are working correctly.apart from this they do wear out internal parts and then do these types of things.
Check the transmission fluid level while idling in park with the handbrake on.also if the fluid smells burnt and/or looks dark,it is time for a rebuild.Could you supply some more info, what was the trans like on last drive prior to fault, did it just start up and do this or did it begin while driving?

I have that problem with my 01 eclipse gt. It the three relay in the front fuse box. The three that look alike. It messes with my fuel pump, throws the car in third gear, and make something in the engine tick. I just changed them around till I could buy new ones. It not your transmission I got screwed out of 2,000 dollars.
