Your Land Rover is no doubt fuel injected.maybe cold start injector. injects gasoline when starting in the cold, carburated vehicles used to have a choke to enrich air/fuel ratio when starting in cold.

Cold start valve?

When it's cold, try starting the car and check to see if the cold start valve is getting power. You may have a bad fuel accumulator.

Why does my 1992 MB 500sel not always start on the first try? Is this a common problem or do I have to change something? It drives fine once it starts. It's pretty embarrasing sometimes start your mercedes...

The 2 things to help start at first try are the coolant sensor and the cold start valve. If the coolant sensor is bad , it give an erratic resistance so the cold start valve could not open to assist the start. If the cold start is not open then you have not had the assist from the cold start valve. Good luck.

My dodge dakota 6 cylinder auto hesitates when starting out - after that it drives fines. My mechanic has tried everything.

Not sure if that particular model has a cold start injector, but if it does, you might try replacing it. It gives extra fuel on a cold start. If extra fuel is supplied thru the computer itself, you won't have a cold start injector.

Hard to start on cold mornings but starts fine when warm

The cold start valve is not operating correctly. Either the engine coolant temperature sensor is bad or the cold start valve itself is bad. You can check the engine coolant temperature sensor by going to radio shack or any electronic store and purchase a 15k ohm or higher resistor. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECTS) harness. Bridge the 2 female spade connections in the harness with the resistor. Start the engine. If the engine starts you need to replace the ECTS. If the engine is still hard to start, you need to remove the cold start valve, (wear safety goggles, and whatever you do don't smoke) place the cold start valve in a glass and have someone crank the engine. You should see gas coming out from the cold start valve. If not take a ohm meter and measure the terminal at the cold start valve after disconnecting the wire harness. The meter should read 25 ohms. If it doesn't replace the cold start valve.
