Question about 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

1 Answer

2002 Alero has a long crank but will not start.

My 2002 Alero is having trouble starting. The battery, starter, alternator, cam sensor, crank sensor and fuel pump are fine. There are no warning lights showing on the dash and the onboard computer is giving no codes when analized. When it does not start it simply has a long crank without firing. I pulled a plug wire off the coil when it was doing this and there was no spark. However, I can always get it to eventually start and sometimes it starts right up. Also, it has died on me one time since this has started. I was going about 40mph and it was like someone turned the key off. I coasted to the side of the road and it started on the first turn of the key. I do not want to waste alot of money trying to diagnose this so any help would be great.

I assume you checked the fuel pressure and it is normal.
Are the spark plugs getting spark when it fails to start ?
Are you getting injector pulse from the computer ?
Any trouble codes stored in the computer ?

Is it the battery or the alternator

All the battery does is supply power to the starter to crank the engine over. The alternator doesn't start working until after the engine is started. It supplies electrical power to the engine after it has started and also recharges the battery. If the engine is cranking over but not starting it is neither the alternator or the battery. Check for spark and fuel pressure your most likely missing one of these.

Hi driving today and hit a bump in the road and then my car shut off as it came to a stop i put it in park and started it and it started right up. What could be the problem

The crank sensor or cam sensor would cause those exact symptoms-have the computer scanned to see if there are any pending codes (done free at most commercial auto parts stores). If there are, write the code (s) down so we can give you specific advise. If there are none, I would suggest that the connectors for the crank and cam sensors be removed and connections cleaned. Depending on how many miles you have on your Alero, you might want to replace the crank sensor-they are not real expensive (less than $50) and are pretty easy to replace.

'90 lexus es250 wont start..

Get it diagnosed correctly. This is why we have 20,000 dollars of diagnostic equipment. If we were to guess I would of suggested the fuel pump.

This defineatly was not an alternator issue or a starter issue or battery by what your symptoms were.

You could have a failed computer or crank sensor or ignition module. Only testing will tell you what is not at fault and what is.

Car wouldnt make connection when trying to start it I had the alternator replaced in 03 could it be the distributor or alernator again

Difficult to understand your problem. Are you saying the engine 'cranks' but won't start? OR, are you saying it won't crank at all?... If it won't crank, the problem is in the starter system circuit (battery, starter relay, battery cable connections, starter cable connections, solenoid wire connection, the starter itself, etc.). If it cranks but won't start, the problem could be anywhere (ignition, fuel, injectors, air, valve timing, crank position sensor, etc.).
