If the shifter feels tight in the movement then I would suspect failed engine mounts and gear box mounts allowing excessive engine /gear box movement.

Four wheel drive dosn't transfer over to all wheel drive

AWD is a selection you, the driver makes, but the computer operates. It is not four wheel drive, it is basically, traction control that utilizes all four wheels. The computer determines whether the front and/or rear axle receives power, and then decides which side of the vehicle to apply the power to. If the switch is not moving into the AWD position then it is likely a problem with the switch itself as there is no electrical issue that would prevent it from going into that selection.

How do I put the vehicle in 4 wheel drive (after locking the hubs) and then how do you take it out of 4 wheel?

If you don't have a separte shifter next to the floor shifter then yours as full time four wheel drive and the hubs are the only way to turn them on and off. The other answer is it's not a four wheel drive as this shifter is in plain veiw next to the regular shifter. Not all side hicks are four wheel drive and if it doesn't have a front rear end and front driveshaft, it's not. The lock in and out hubs are used on both and the two wheel drive has dummies.

Four wheel drive shifter will not move

Put the transmission into neutral, then allow the vehicle to roll backwards, this will unbind the transfer case, pull on the shifter while rolling. If that doesn't work, then your linkage under the vehicle has something putting it in a bind. look around and make sure it moves around with slack. Enjoy

1979 ford f-250 four wheel drive won't engage

I take it the transfer case shifter feels okay (shifts through all four gear positions), so try jack up one side of front end, rotate wheel while looking in knuckle to see if drive axle turns, if it does, then hubs engaged. Now if someone holds the front d shaft, and wheel won't turn, then both hubs are engaged. Next put t case in 4xhi or 4xlow, if you cant turn the wheel, then the t case is engaged, and all is normal. If wheel still turns at this point, then the t case is not engaged for some reason, but post again if it does. Hope this helps.
