HAVE SOMEONE EXTRACT THE CODE FROM THE CAR'S COMPUTER. IF THERE IS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON THEN THE PCM HAS A CODE STORED ON IT. IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE A THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, BUT JUST CHECK THE CODE TO BE SURE. SOME OF THESE CAN ALSO HAVE A BAD IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU TO FIND THE PROBLEM. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED, THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA. GOOD LUCK

SOURCE: my car is sputtering and

Having had the same experience with Saturn, I suggest you get your car in the darkest area you can, turn off all lights, let the engine idle, open the hood. Allow time for your eyes to adjust to the dark and then look for errant sparks near all ignition wiring. I had to replace ours before the car even had three years and less than 30000 miles on it. Every lead had failed although some still didn't lose all of their continuity. If you have a multimeter of any kind, you can measure each lead from end-to-end. They should have resistance of 5-15kOhms not higher. I had several measuring 'open' (infinite) by the time ours failed and acted like yours.
It's one of those places GM tried to save a few pennies after absorbing the company and ruining the quality they once had.

At idle, why does speedometer show about 5 or 6 miles per hour and the odometer shows the mileage going up while sitting still?

Could be a bad instrument panel(IP). Rough idle in gear could be a vacuum leak. Maybe a tune up.
