Question about 1998 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

Not engaging the starter

My 98 Jimmy has been having a problem off and on with the starter not engaging. In the past when it would happen I could wait a few minutes and then it would start. It's gotten worse to the point that it won't start. I replaced the battery and it worked fine for a couple of days and today no starter. Any suggestions?

If the starter is the original, it may be time for a replacement.

I have a 98 Jimmy that when I try to start it the starter does not engage, I put a new battery in and it seemed to work for a couple of days and now it's back to the same problem. Any suggestions?

sounds like the starter is going, what happens is the battery had more power to help get the starter to operate a few more times but it is already shot. The part that will go on starters is the Bendix. It's the part that pushes the drive gear out to the front of the shaft to engage it with the flywheel. It's like a spring and plunger assembly with a magnetic part that pushes a fork on the gear while the key is turned and then springs back away from the flywheel once you let up on the key. You extra power from your new battery got it to push the gear out but was bound to fail since those parts were worn out. That's why you will hear the starter wizzing up but not engaging on the flywheel or you'll hear that grinding sound. that is due to the starter already turning the drive gear before the bendix has moved the gear forward. The gear is spinning and the bendix is stuck but then comes loose and tries to kick the spinning gear out and just grinds the flywheel without ever having the chance for the teeth to align first.

bottom line is you will need a new starter.

1999 gmc jimmy starting problems

Sounds like the brushes in the starter are not making contact, could be sticking or gummed up. Could also be the key switch or the neutral safety switch.
You would need to rig up a wire going down to the purple wire on the starter and check it for power when the engine will not crank. If it has power odds are the starter is the problem.

Suspect the crankshaft/camshaft sensor may be bad which controls timing of both spark and injector firing. The check engine light should be on--rent a scanner, read any codes and pursue to repairs. Hope you installed the new distributor exactly as the old one.

Possible not shimmed correctly. The starter teeth have to engage correctly for the starter not to hang up. That's what probably happened & broke teeth off. You had better check your flywheel around the entire circumfrence as teeth may be missing from it as well. Starter won't engage if teeth and flywheel teeth in same spot are broken off. If the flywheel teeth are bad, it will be a spendy fix to put a new one on... Rick

4 wd low range will sometimes engage 4wd high will never engage

I had a very similar problem with my 98 gmc 2500. The 4 low would engage - though the upshifts were erratic, but no 4 high though the light sometimes came on. I changed out the electric shift solenoid or whatever it is called, on the transfer case and it worked fine after that. A fairly simple fix that can be done in 15 minutes. Hope this helps.
