If the car runs for a second and then dies its not the punp but try it again and see if the theft light either stays on or blinks if so its the factory passlock11 security system you may need to get a new coded key or ignition module

Just got my 2003 alero out of the shop last week....it was the fuel pump....mechanic said my filter
probably got it, should have changed it long ago. No problems whatsoever, stopped at red light, didn't want to go....chugged along for a few yards, managed to pull into a parking lot, and it backfired and
died....my husband thought it may have jumped time, but it was the fuel pump. I would start, then die immediately...did this several times before we had it towed to local shop...Yours sounds the same! GL

Easy way to find out. #1 take some starting fluid, a very short 1 or 2 second squirt into the air intake tube by the air filter. see if car starts. if it does it could be the pump or the fuel pressure regulator or maybe your not getting spark to the coils. #2 take a big rubber mallet and while some turns the engine over whack the bottom of the gas tank real hard (Rubber mallet). if the pump kicks on and the car starts then you have a bad fuel pump. #3, find the schreader valve on the end of the fuel rail, turn key to on position, press the schreader valve, if gas flies out then your pump is working.

Car shuts off as if starved of fuel remove fuel line and prime car starts

There's a fuel pump relay that turns on the fuel pump, as you turn on the ignition before the engine starts, to prime and pressurize the injectors. I'd check the relay it may not be operating.

Well, look for spark, if you have it to the plugs, verified, then try having someone pound on the low spot of the fuel tank. while you try to start. Sometimes this will allow a fuel pump to restart. If that does it, replace the pump soon, it is pricey.

Won't start its like its not getting gas. I can turn the key and pump on the gas it will rev up and shut off. I thought it was the fuel pump so I changed it and that didn't solve the problem what else can...

maybe its bad gas, or an idle issue. you shouldnt have to pump the gas when you start that can actually lead to flooding the engine with gas. Turn the key on and wait about 30 secs before cranking this will ensure your getting proper amount of gas to injector lines. It may take a bit to get rid of gas in there but keep doing it until it starts properly. Also note in doing this do not continuously crank it as the starter and solenoid will fry. Also if you fear there is no gas going to engine look for a gas line bleeder valve. Looks like a tire valve head and usually is covered with a black plastic lid. If you push it in and gas squirts out then your getting gas to engine. If you release all gas and turn the key on and test gas line again and no gas comes out then its what is called a dry start, aka no gas getting to motor. Hence failure of fuel filter or fuel pump. Or a general clog in gas line.

Adding gas

gas pumps turn off when they sense flow re-entering the nozzle. Try adjusting how far you are shoving the pump nozzle into the vehicle. or don't squeeze the pump too hard (the excess velocity creates turbulence which creates back-splash and triggers the sensor).

1998 Jeep Cherokee won't start?

I need to confirm some information. The engine is rotating, just not starting, right? When you put the key into the "on" position, do you hear the fuel pump prime itself? You'll hear a hum sound for a couple of seconds. If not, spray some starting fluid into the throttle body and see if the engine starts. If it does start with the starting fluid, then shuts off again, the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay is bad. I'd change the relay first, if that doesn't help, the fuel pump is bad.
