No, replace the choke and /or wiring. You have 12 volts to it, replace the choke.

SOURCE: jeep cj won't idle

Assuming that the jeep has not been modified it is likely the Carter BBD Carburetor on that engine, or the sensor inputs to the carburetor.

The Carter BBD has an idling circuit that is always seeking. There is a stepper motor that keeps changing the rpm, and fuel mixture. It basically never stabilizes, and it keeps adjusting based on the feedback loop from half a dozen or so sensors.

So, if a sensor goes bad and feeds a constant signal to the carb, you get problems.

The Carter BBD is a very difficult carb to rebuild and is usually fairly dear in terms of cost.

If you can find a Jeep factory repair manual (on ebay) on the 85 cj -- it is an olive green manual about 3 inches thick and is usually not too expensive, it has troubleshooting procedures for the BBD. Don't get a Haines or aftermarket manual. get the olive drab official factory manual

Remember it is probably the carb that is bad, but there may be more to it than just that.. I don't remember all the inputs to the stepper motor circuit, but I do know that EGR valve is one of them.

good luck

Electric choke from the factory, the choke pull off runs off of power from the alternators stator post which supplies about 7 volts when its running.Spring tension and a stomp on the throttle set it.

1985 bronco 2 dies as if key was turned off

The choke has a thermostat spring that keeps it closed until it warms up.
Its possible you have a bad relay or other electrical part that is causing the ignition system to loose power.

1986 toyota truck electric choke

Is it hard to start? The choke has some notches on the side by the electric choke plug...rich to lean...If hard to start cold, loosen choke screws on side and turn the dial toward close (rich) retighten adjustment screws and recheck performance...If choke stays on to long after warm up (idles fast) adjust the choke toward open or lean position. Try no more than 2 notches either way between tests...Hope this helps.

I have a 1985 oldsmobile toronado and i was driving it all day yesterday and now diz moroning im trying to start it and it wont start for nothing i pump the gas, spray carburetor cleaner on it and it

If it won't start, then pumping the gas and using carb cleaner may make it worse. Carb cleaner is not the same as starting fluid. It will make the engine harder to start. If it's flooded, then pumping the gas will only flood it more. If you need to de-flood, then press the accelerator pedal ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR and HOLD it there while cranking. Don't pump it.
Have you looked at the top of the carburetor while someone cranks the engine? Does the choke close when you press the accelerator for the first (and only) time? You state that you replaced the choke; do you mean the electric choke spring? Is it adjusted correctly? You need to know the choke setting for it to work properly.
Then again, it may have nothing to do with the choke. Do you have spark at the plugs? Have you checked the fuel filter?

85 ranger 2.0, somtimes when i press on the gas ( especially on cold mornings) it will sputter and it will take a while for it to get going, but after a while it will clear itself out and then will ru

I would check the choke for proper operation , remove the air cleaner lid and see if the choke butterfly valve closes when you press the gas pedal down once with a cold engine, if not clean the choke blade and the linkage that close it with carb cleaner spray.

Engine runs rough and istrument Gages not working

It sounds like you need to inspect the wiring harness and look for broken wires and any wires that are hanging they may not be connected, the black exhaust is caused by a choke plate that is not opening on the carb the electric choke is not getting any voltage through the wire or the choke plate is out of adjustment it should be wide open after 5 minutes of running, check the fuses to be sure there is no blown fuses and check the wire that goes to the carb. to ensure it has 12 volts.

I have a motorhome make Honey 421S with a chevy 454. the choke light stays on, and it smells like a gas station after a ride. Consumes lots of fuel and I don't understand the vacuum system. Anyone can...

Update? If the Motorhome has a carburetor, its pretty old and has a P30 chassis. Gm makes the truck, Honey makes the camper. Check the electric choke and make sure it has power to it when the engine is running, if not check all fuses. I dont have a diagram to see where the choke gets power from. Make sure the choke pull off is working, its a little vac can on the right side of the carb, if it leaks, it wont pull the choke flap open. Anyone that works on Quadrajet Carbs can fix it for you.

Choke won't close all the way down

I'm not exactly sure about the 1987 toyota choke, but the basic concept of a choke is that the butterfly(flap in top of the carburetor) needs to close to allow less air and more fuel to enter the intake when the engine is cold. This is acomplished on most carburetors with an electric choke thermostat. The thermostat has a bimetallic spring that is would up and connected to the butterfly through a rod. The bimetallic spring is made of a special allow that expands and contracts as the temperature changes. Usually through a relay of some sort 12v or less is applied to the choke thermostat with the engine running and used to heat the spring therefor releasing tension on the closed butterfly. It sounds like your butterfly is never opening as the engine is warming up, and staying on fast idle. See if there is a wire on the thermostat and remove it and check it with a voltmeter with the car running, there should be >8vDc. If there's voltage then the thermostat is probably faulty(as long as the linkage is ok) If there is no voltage, check the fuses and fuse links and then consult a schematic to see where the voltage is suppiled from/to, could be a faulty relay as well.
