Sounds like a starter or battery fault. If the battery is low, there is enough power to operate the starter solenoid but not the starter, so you get the click of the solenoid only (Charge battery or jump start). Same thing, the starter motor is not turning, but the solenoid is clicking (replace starter). Another possibility check all earth connections ie: battery to chassis, chassis to engine. if high resistance could give same symptons.

96 Ford Ranger 2.3L ticking sound. Comes and goes. Puff of white smoke coming from exhaust only on initial start up. Slight rough idle.

The noise is lifters, the smoke is valve seals. This engine is showing signs of wear on the top end.

Why does not start?

I have never heard of an engine noise being described as a tick tack rattling noise. (I assume you mean Tick Tack candy/breathmints?) \

Either way, if it doesnt start, but just makes a rattling/knocking sound, I would ask you did it just quit on you and not restart? Or did it get you where you were going and then would not start when you were ready to leave? If the answer to the first question is yes, then you are likely facing a broken timing belt. The sound you hear are the valves coming into contact with the pistons when you are cranking the starter. This is a bad sound. Lets hope your answer was no to the first and yes to the second. Are you sure have gas? I cannot tell you how many times people have told me "It just won't start!" only to pour a gallon of gas in and varrroooom! What about oil? The tick tack sound just doesn't sound like a healthy engine sound in my head. Do you have oil in the engine? Does somebody hate you enough to drop nuts and bolts into your intake manifold? That would sound like tick tacks. BIG GIANT tick tacks, but tick tacks nonetheless.

Replaced crank shaft ticking noise

There are a lot of steps involved in replacing a crank shaft where a simple mistake can cause problems. The bolts and end caps need to go back in the exact same position and direction facing the front. The crank needs to be stored upright or it can be damaged simply by its own weight while lying down. The bearings need to be the correct size and installed in the proper position lining oil holes up and greased properly. The bolts need to be torqued in the proper sequence and to the correct torque. The Crank then needs to be tapped with a hammer and torqued again.

Sounds like something was missed if your getting a bottom end engine noise now.

I tried to start my jeep it wouldn't even crank ,earlier to day when i started it made a noise when it cranked ,i turned the engine off and restarted it .started right up later after noon it wouldn't even...

if it doesnt even crank then its possible that your starter motor is damaged or maybe the battery. but if it is the battery you would at least hear a ticking noise when you start the engine. i would suggest to have it checked by a competent mechanic *** electrician to pinpoint the problem.

Motor cranks but wont start

ok i have to start by saying we need more info about this to help solve this faster . this first thing i would do is turn the key on to hear if the fuel pump is pumping . if so then check if it is getting to the throttelbody by removing the cover off of it and checking if you get it up to there . 2nd check all of my wires making sure there are no burnt ones . 3rd the cap and rotor. if nothing after that pull the wire off the front drivers side and place it close to the spark plug and have some one crank it over .listen for a tick, tick, tick noise or you can see it sparking . but if the car acts like it wants to start it could be the timing is off .

2000 LINCOLN/LS/3.9L V8 FI DOHCwont start ticking noise

Have the battery terminals checked - sound like a loose battery terminal. As u go over a bump it can cut out the engine then u dont have a good enough contact to run the starter. Get someone to try to crank as you wiggle the battery leads if it cuts the lights on the dash intermittently theres your prolem. Also check the ground wires to the motor.
Hope u get sorted
