Sounds like a turbo problem, check all electrical connections and vaccum hoses, any engine lights on? Then it's time to take it in, I assume you have a good VW expert just around the corner who is honest, reasonable, and reliable,,,, sometimes it happens! Hope this helps, and look into it right away, it can cause other problems if let go $$$$.

SOURCE: 1997 jetta lacks power
It can be issue with dirty throttle body.The carbon layer got collected on throttle body.Also the IAC and MAF valve needs to be inspected,.
