Help changing alternator on 1998 honda civic. how do you remove the belt or is there a belt?

The alternator has a bolt that is adjustable to keep tension on the belt. There should be a single bolt that is fixed, and probably another that sits in a slot in the bracket that allows adjustment. You'll loosen the bolt in the bracket slot and give the belt some slack, and it should come off the pulley. When replacing, you may have to have someone help pull the alternator so it puts tension on the belt, and then you can tighten it down. I have seen some vehicles that have a bolt that will turn in or out to either tighten the alternator or loosen it.

Need to change alternator

loosen tensioner bolt, but do not remove bolt. tensioner will drop down enough to get your belt back on. then lift tensioner back into position it was, re-tighten bolt. belt rides over top of of tensioner smooth pulley, note , sometimes the tensioner wears out and needs replaced, go to rockauto .com for best price. also, have the alternator bolts loosened when putting belt back on , this will help , but remember to re-tighten them after belt is on.

How do I fix alternator on Honda civic 2005?

Instructions

Make sure you have the radio unlock code for your Civic, if equipped with the anti-theft radio. Disconnect your negative battery cable and gather the tools required for the procedure. Make sure your workplace is safe and well-lit.

Remove the drive belt to better access the alternator. Remove the 4P connector from the alternator, and then remove the battery wiring module.

Use your socket wrench to remove the alternator bolts, and then slip the alternator away from its mount.

Mount the new alternator in its place. Use the torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 33 ft.-lbs. This is the specific rating for the Honda Civic, do not disregard this. Not properly tightening the bolts could cause problems.

Attach the 4P connection and the battery wiring module. Replace the drive belt and reconnect the negative battery cable.

Make sure your radio and air conditioning are turned off, and then crank the engine. Rev the engine to 3,000 RPM with the vehicle in park. Hold it in this position under you hear the radiator fan turn on.

Take your foot off the accelerator and let the engine idle for five minutes. Set your clock and use your code to unlock your radio.

  1. Step 1: Tighten each bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2. Step 2: Tighten each bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  3. Step 3: Tighten each bolt to 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
  4. Step 4: Retighten only the two center bolts to 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).

Alternator

There are 2 bolts that hold the alternator in position. One bolt is near the top of the alternator, the other is near the bottom. The bottom bolt threads through the end of the ADJUSTMENT bolt (which is at a 90 degree angle to this mounting bolt, and faces threaded end w/ adjustment nut to alternator). Loosen 2 mounting bolts, adjust tension at adjustment nut (near alternator), tighten 2 mounting bolts (upper bolt 33 ft lbs, Lower mounting bolt 18 ft lbs). countrycurt0
