SOURCE: 1984 Porsche 944 Speedo Cable

might be the sensor on the gearbox that is faulty or wire is damaged and going to earth.

Posted on May 23, 2013

Testimonial: "Hi Thanks, but its a 1984 Porsche 944 with speedo cable (mid 1985 they put in the sensor)to left front wheel (Like VW Beetle)no sensor or anything -all mechanical. It must be something simple (like me) but can't find any problems, all cable and fittings seem perfect. Can only think it might be something in the hub itself - but not sure what should be in there.... "

I have 1993 jeep grand cherokee spedometor stopped working and rpms are high and fuel consumption is poor

Time for a tune-up! Need to have it diagnosed thoroughly. Likely your speedometer not working is not related, though. I know on the older models the speedo was operated by a cable from transmission up to behind the dash panel. They can break inside the sheath that covers the cable. Pretty simple fix-but you may need to pull out your instrument panel slightly to reach behind and unclip the end of the cable from the speedo. First, unhook end from transmission, grab end of cable and twirl it: someone inside the car can see if the speedo needle moves slightly when you twirl it. If it DOES move your speedo in the dash may need replacing. If it doesn't move, your cable is likely broke. Just get another from a salvage yard.

How do change the speedomiter cable

Hi, If you can reach up behind the dash to unscrew the speedo cable that will be the hardest thing to do. the other is on the transmission side and is easier to undo. But if you have the newer style of speedo (electronic speed sensor) you will be opening another can of worms. The best thing there is to have a mechanic do this. Good luck.

Trying to replace the speedo cable on my 72 olds 98. How do i get to the cable at the speedometer? do i have to take off the entire dash?

It's easier to remove the speedo part of the dash, screws on top of cluster and around steering column, I can't remember where all the srews are, as you pull it out, reach behind it and unclip the cable, there should be an electrical connector also, now you can reach the cable. I can't remember if the steering column need to drop down, I guess you will find out.
Sorry it's been awhile since I worked on that old of car, but I had a 73 - 442 good luck

Rev counter not working. It remains at zero

It sounds like tach is wornout, but you'll need to remove the instrument cluster to replace it. You'll need to reach in behind the speedo from above, to remove the speedo cable, before it can come out. Change the LED while you have the cluster apart.

Speedometer cable squealing... When driving there is a high pitched vibration sound coming from what sounds and looks like the speedometer. It sounds like the cable needs lubed. Is there a way to do this...

You will have to make room by removing the bottom cover under the dash, and reach and feel for the speedo cable retainer. It will either squese together the plastic retainer that surrounds the cable at the speedo,or push a steel clip toward the speedo, and pull the cable out after doing this.Pull the cable down to were you can see it.Take some needle nose pliers, and grab the center cable, and pull it out of the cable casing, about 3 feet.Grease the cable with a heavey grease all up and down the cable,it will be messy.Feed the cable back into the cable casing and when you get to where it will not go all the way in,push and turn the cable until it aligns up with the gear in the transmission. If the cable will not come out of the casing ,then remove the end at the trans, and remove the retaining clip.

Speedo doesnt work

Speedometer Cable REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Reach behind the speedometer and depress the retaining clip. Pull the cable from the casing. If the cable is broken, raise the car and disconnect the cable at the transmission. Lubricate only the bottom 3⁄4 of the cable core with speedometer cable lubricant. Reconnect all parts.

I'm trying to remove the instrument cluster on 88 astro

If this is one of the models that does have a speedo cable, then you have to find a way to get your hand behind it to press in the tab lock that holds the speedo cable to the back of the guage. Without doing that, you will break something.

How to install speedometer cable

The vehicle will have to be jacked in the air safely to remove the cable from the trans. Some fluid will come out too,so have a catch basin in place. You have to climb onto the floor board, and lay on your back looking up into the underside of the dash.Locate the speedo cable and follow it up to the speedo head with your hand. When you reach the area where the cable dead ends into the speedo head, feel around for a locking clip or tab.You will either squeeze or lift the tab,and this will release the old cable from the speedo head.Pull the cable through the firewall grommet, and remove the cable.Reverse to reinstall. There may be a plastic gear on the trans end of the cable that has to be removed and reinstalled on the new cable. The gear is removed by removing the metal retainer clip shaped like a horseshoe.Good luck.
