Sounded like metal to metal. Like it was rotating..loud and then quiet, loud quiet, etc. etc. almost an airy metal to metal sound, as if something was stuck in the engine

    I just replaced the battery

No, it runs great....I had it sitting for a few months. The grinding wasn't there untill I replaced the battery and got it started again. The last time I tried to start it the grinding would start but the car wouldn't turn over... Then the grinding stopped after a few tries. Thanks

Had the car been running rough before hand?

It may well be a snapped con rod. Would allow the engine to turn for a while until it jams by the crankshaft.

If the car is manual it may be the clutch plate but with your foot on the clutch it shouldnt stop it.

Probably so. When making a left hand turn, if the noise gets loader, it is the right side bearing. IE... putting more wieght on that side of the car.

Loud grinding noise under hood, oil like substance on a belt, Power Steering Stiff, has PS fluid

Almost sound like your rack and pinion cylinder has gone bad. I would start by cleaning the area real well to get rid of the oil. With the car running have someone sit inside and turn the wheels from left to right while you stand and watch to see if you can see oil leaking and from where and also to see if you can tell where the grinding is coming from. Please do not try to clean the engine with it running as you will get burned from heat and your clothes may become tangled in moving parts.

95 Buick lesabre making loud grinding noise when starting. Once started runs and drives fine no noises

Yes, you are probably right about the spacer or shim. A salvage yard should have lots of them for little or nothing. When you remove the starter for the spacer, check the drive gear end of the starter for severe wear. If it is chewed off very bad, have a new drive gear put on, or replace the starter.

TAPPING NOISE, NOW IT WON'T GO INTO GEAR WITHOUT LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND ACTS LIKE TRANSMISSION WON'T ENGAGE TO DRIVE

If it is an automatic transmission, first check the fluid level. If it is low, fill it up and try it again. If the level is fine, then there is a bigger issue and you should seek a professional's help.
