Double posted, but now the HOW word.
so does that mean spark is gone, the spark test failed?
we dont proceed until spark is failed. not at all, is it?
after all if spark is good, this is barking up the wrong tree. $$$$$$$

ok, in my last post i linked a photo (rockauto) to your coil
and if you look there are screws holding it in the dizzy
so off the cap, off the screws and wires to it and its free.
i bet its not bad. im 99.9% sure.


why not ask the ECU why there is no spark,
if in FACT the SIMPLE SPARK test fails.

i can tell you step by step
in general
1: insert CHECK jumper, (paper clip works , metal kind not plastic)
2: crank for 5 sec.
3: release key. (not key turned off)
4: the CEL lamp in the dash blinks out magic blink codes, that tell you
spark is bad, and why.? do not swap parts, ask for help
the ECU never knows what part is bad, only tests that FAIL.

Jumper check connector terminals T (TE1) to E1
this is the official TOY doc, it's for technicians.

The TE1 pin is ground , so we jump ground to E1
this activates the DTC FLASH CODES.

    the check jumper tests are super easy to do. and can save you bundle of cash , doing it. if spark is dead at the coil , run the Check diagnostic cranking, the ECU will tell you which end fails. case in point it will tell you the coil side is bad, or the precursor side, called the CMP, if the cmp is dead, all spark ends and fueling. the ecu detect both failures. but my not detect the COIL secondary side bad, (weak spark) good luck. and do post any steps not clear, can help.

    the coil can have many forms, depends on which engine, my guess, (no book) is he coil (only one) is on fire all or inside distributor, you never posted the symptoms, ever get a tuneup this decade, if not no coil on earth and make spark wtih bad HV wires , bad spark plugs ,nor burn missing fuel that cant pass through the clogged fuel filter, nor burn fuel do to Air cant pass through clogged air filter. that is, never the coil. (its last)

How to Test and Replace Ignition Coil on BMW 3 Series


The following procedures apply for BMW 3 series (6-cylinders engine) 1992 - 1998 model years. To Test and Replace the Ignition Coil, do the following:
  1. Remove plastic engine covers from top of engine by prying off nut covers and removing cover mounting nuts.
  2. Disconnect harness connector from coil. Connect multimeter between terminal 15 (+) in connector and ground. (use a digital multimeter for the following test). See Fig.1. below BMW 3 series coil harness
  3. Turn ignition on and check for battery voltage. If battery voltage is not present, check wire between terminal 15 and ignition switch. The wiring to terminal 15 (+) of the coil (via the ignition switch) is not fuse protected. Use care when testing this circuit.
  4. Turn ignition off.
  5. Use a multimeter to test coil primary resistance at coil terminals. (primary coil terminals: 1 (-) and 15 (+), primary coil resistance: 0.4-0 .8 ohms; secondary coil terminal and resistance: NA).
  6. Remove coil and inspect coil housing for hairline cracks or leaking casting material . A leaky ignition coil may indicate a faulty engine control module (ECM). Check ECM before installing a new coil.
  7. When replacing ignition coils, ensure that the replacement coil(s) are from the same manufacturer containing the same part code numbers. If individual coils with the correct specifications are not available, all coils should be replaced.

Ignition coils are heating up and will not restart until they cool. need wiring diagram for installing an external resister


Simple solution will be to run a wire from the ignition "on" position to the resistor and then from the resistor to the coil positive. Then run a seperate wire from the ignition "start" position directly to the coil positive. To determine which wire is wich on the ignition you will need a voltmeter or test lamp to measure each of the terminals on the rear of the ignition in each position.

The above set-up will give a lower voltage to the coil at normal running and an increased voltage at start-up as it bypasses the resistor when starting. This may cause a new set of problems such as low coil voltage and subsequent weak spark. I would suggest that you first make sure you have the correct type of sparkplug fitted. It may be that your vehicle originally came with suppressed plugs or suppressed plug wires. If the suppressors were removed it may cause high current draw on the secondary side of the coil and also lead to overheating.

SKIPPING PROBLEM . SPARK PLUGS & WIRES HAS BEEN DONE. THERE'S NO 12 VOLTS AT THE COIL CONNECTOR PLUG WITH THE KEY ON. LYMAN


Sound like a ground problem; the fastest way to identify the Power and Ground Circuits is using a wiring diagram. If you don't have one you'll have to find out by trial and error as you probe each circuit.

The power circuit is tested with the Key On and Engine Off. Place one end of your multimeter or Test Light on the Battery Negative Terminal and with the other end, probe the Power Circuit. Turn the Key to the Run position. If the Power Circuit is OK, the Multimeter will show 12 Volts or the Test Light will light up. Here are the possible results:
* You got 12 Volts on the Power Circuit
Good, this is a good sign. The next step is to check the Ground Circuit of the Coil on Plug connector that you're testing.

* No Power in only one Ignition Coil
Without 12 Volts, the Coil-on-Plug Ignition Coil will not work, thus you have just eliminated that specific Ignition Coil as the source of the fault. Replacing the Ignition Coil with a new one will only be a waste of time and money since, without Power the new one will not Spark.
Since the Power Circuit is shared by all of the coils on the majority of Coil-on-Plug Ignition Systems. The most likely cause will be an open short in that Ignition Coil's Power Circuit.
You'll have to consult your Repair Manual's wiring diagrams to make sure how everything is wired up.
After repairing the short, re-do the Spark Test to verify the Ignition Coil is now working.

* No Power at any Ignition Coils
The fuse or relay that supplies this voltage is blown or BAD.
You'll have to consult your Repair Manual's wiring diagrams to see where this fuse and/or relay is located and replace as necessary.
After replacing the blown fuse or the defective relay. Retest the Ignition Coil.

Them, the Ground Circuit is tested with the Key On or Off. It doesn't matter because this is a Chassis Ground. Place one end of your multimeter or Test Light on the Battery Positive Terminal and with the other end, probe the Ground Circuit. If the Ground Circuit is OK, the Multimeter will show 12 Volts or the Test Light will light up.

* You got Ground
Good, now the next step is to verify that the Coil-on-Plug Ignition Coil is receiving the Triggering Signal. This info belongs to the next section of this article.

* No Ground in only one Ignition Coil
Without this Ground, the Coil-on-Plug Ignition Coil will not work, thus you have just eliminated that specific Ignition Coil as the source of the fault. Replacing the Ignition Coil with a new one will only be a waste of time and money since, without Ground the new one will not Spark.
Since the Ground Circuit is shared by all of the coils on the majority of Coil-on-Plug Ignition Systems. The most likely cause will be an open short in that Ignition Coil's Ground Circuit.
You'll have to consult your Repair Manual's wiring diagrams to make sure how everything is wired up.
After repairing the short, re-do the Spark Test to verify the Ignition Coil is now working.

* No Ground at any Ignition Coils
This usually happens thru' human error in most cases and is a very rare thing. Usually the engine was replaced and this ground was not re-attached.
You can Ground this circuit with a jumper wire. Jumpering to Ground just one Coil-on-Plug Ignition Coil should provide Ground to all of them (consult your Repair Manual's Wiring Diagrams to be sure).
With this jumper wire to Ground attached, crank the vehicle.
If in fact the Ground Circuit does have an open short, this (the jumper wire to Ground) should make the vehicle start, or at least get the Ignition Coil to Spark.
Repair the open short and retest for Spark or retry starting the vehicle.

Ignition Coil Assembly REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 2.2L (VIN G and 4) Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Detach the assembly electrical connectors.
  4. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires.
  5. Unfasten the three ignition coil assembly-to-block bolts, then remove the assembly from the engine. Fig. 1: Exploded view of the ignition coil assembly - 2.2L (VIN 4) engine shown 87952014.gif
    To install:
  6. Position the ignition coil assembly to the engine. Install the mounting bolts, then tighten to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  7. Connect the spark plug wires to the proper coils, as tagged during removal.
  8. Attach the coil electrical connectors.
  9. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.
2.0L (VIN 1 and H), 2.8L (VIN W) and 3.1L (VIN T) Engines NOTE: On 3.1L engines, an "Idle Learn" procedure must be performed which requires the use of a scan tool. You may wish to have the coil(s) replaced at a proper service facility.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Detach the electrical wires from the ignition coil assembly.
  3. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the assembly.
  4. Unfasten the mounting bolts, then remove the assembly from the engine. NOTE: On the 2.8L and 3.1L engines, with the coil pack removed, each coil can be removed and the ignition module can be removed as well. Fig. 2: On the 2.0L engine, if any part of the ignition coil is faulty, the entire coil assembly must be replaced 87952013.gif

    To install:
  5. Position the ignition coil assembly on the engine. Install the mounting bolts, then tighten to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) for the 2.8L and 3.1L engines. For the 2.0L (VIN 1) engine, tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6. Attach the plug wires to the proper coils, as tagged during removal.
  7. Fasten the ignition coil assembly wiring.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable. NOTE: On the 3.1L engine, this test must be done before the engine is started and requires the use of a Tech 1® , or equivalent, scan tool.
  9. If equipped with the 3.1L engine, perform the idle learn procedure to allow the ECM/PCM memory to be updated with the correct IAC valve pintle position and provide for a stable idle speed.
    1. Install an appropriate scan tool.
    2. Turn the ignition to the ON position, engine not running.
    3. Select IAC SYSTEM, then IDLE LEARN in the MISC TEST mode.
    4. Place the transaxle in park or neutral, as applicable.
    5. Proceed with idle learn as directed by the scan tool.

Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PVC) Valve Removal & Installation 5.7L Engine To Remove:
    1.The PCV valve is mounted into the top/right side of the intake manifold.

    2.The PCV valve is sealed to the intake manifold with two O-rings.

    3.Free the PCV valve by rotating counter-clockwise 90 degrees until the locating tabs align with the openings on the manifold.

    4.Remove the PCV valve by pulling straight up from intake manifold and clearing the tabs.

    5.Check the condition of two valve O-rings.
To Install:
  1. Clean the PCV valve opening on the intake manifold.
  2. Inspect the PCV valve O-rings. Replace if suspect.
  3. Apply engine oil to the two O-rings.
  4. Place the PCV valve into intake manifold.
  5. Rotate the valve 90 degrees clockwise for installation.
6.1L Engine To Remove:
  1. The PCV valve is threaded into the right-front corner of the intake manifold.
  2. Remove the rubber hose from the PCV valve.
  3. Unscrew the PCV valve from the intake manifold.
To Install:
  1. Clean the PCV valve opening on the intake manifold.
  2. Check the condition of the PCV valve O-ring. Replace if suspect.
  3. Check the condition of the PCV valve threads and clean if necessary.
  4. Apply engine oil to the O-ring.
  5. Install the PCV valve into intake manifold.
  6. Install the rubber hose to the PCV valve.

The spark plugs should lead to the coil pack via a spark plug wire but may be hidden by a plastic cover.

The following details the ignition coil changing on the Chrysler 300:

2.7L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the intake manifold.
  3. Use compressed air to clear the area around the ignition coil and spark plug.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  5. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil.
  6. Remove the ignition coil.
To Install:
  1. Install the ignition coil.
  2. Tighten the fasteners to 55 in-lb (6.2 Nm).
  3. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
  4. Install the intake manifold.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
3.5L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the intake manifold.
  3. Use compressed air to clear the area around the ignition coil and spark plug.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil. NOTE: Loosen the ignition coil fasteners by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when loosening the fasteners.
  5. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil.
  6. Remove the ignition coil.
To Install:
NOTE: Tighten the ignition coil fasteners by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when installing the coil.
  1. Install the ignition coil.
  2. Tighten the fasteners to 60 in-lb (6.7 Nm).
  3. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
  4. Install the intake manifold.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
5.7L Engine (2005) To Remove:
NOTE: Carefully note the position of each spark plug cable before disconnecting them so they can be installed in their original positions to prevent misfire.
NOTE: The throttle body intake air duct or intake air box may need to be removed to gain access to certain ignition coils.
  1. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  2. Remove the secondary ignition cable from the coil.
  3. Use compressed air to clear the area around the ignition coil.
  4. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil. Bolts are retained to coil.
  5. Remove the ignition coil. Pull with a slight twisting motion to help release the boot seal with the spark plugs.
To Install:
NOTE: Apply a light film of dielectric grease to the inside of the coil boots before installation.
  1. Clean area around spark plug and coil mounting area with compressed air.
  2. Install the ignition coil.
  3. Tighten the fasteners to 105 in-lb (12 Nm).
  4. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
  5. Connect the secondary ignition cable to the coil.
  6. Install the air duct or air box if removed.

Ignition Module REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
  2. Separate the wiring harness connections.
  3. Unbolt the igniter.
  4. Loosen the nut holding the wire lead onto the coil.
  5. Tag and disconnect the wire lead.
  6. Lift the igniter off its mount.
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Ignition Coil TESTING 1994–95 Models
  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds from the time the negative battery was disconnected to start work. CAUTION
    Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time that the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative battery cable is disconnected from the battery.
  2. Using a 5mm hexagon wrench, remove the 2 cap nuts and the V-bank cover. Fig. 1: Remove the V-bank cover, a 5mm hexagon wrench will be needed — 1MZ-FE engine 89552g58.gif

  3. Disconnect the ignition coil wiring from the coil being tested. Fig. 2: Disconnect the ignition coil wiring from the component being tested — 1MZ-FE engine 89552g59.gif

  4. Insect the primary coil resistance using an ohmmeter. Measure the resistance (cold) between the positive and negative terminals. Resistance should be between 0.54–0.84 ohms. Fig. 3: Attach an ohmmeter to the positive and negative terminals of the coil — 1MZ-FE engine 89552g60.gif

  5. If the resistance is not within specifications, replace the ignition coil.
  6. Reattach the ignition coil wiring.
  7. Reinstall the V-bank cover. Push on the cover until a click is felt, then tighten the cap nuts.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable. Reset any digital equipment such as radio memory and the clock if necessary.

Ignition Coil - Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disengage the TFI-IV harness or the engine control sensor wiring connector from the ignition coil, as applicable.
  3. On the 3.8L engine, disengage the engine control wiring connector from the radio ignition interference capacitor.
  4. Remove the ignition coil retaining screws and the ignition coil and radio interference capacitor (if equipped) from the ignition coil mounting bracket.

  1. Remove the ignition coil cover from the ignition coil by releasing the locking tabs on both sides of the cover, then remove the ignition coil.
To install:
  1. Install the ignition coil, then attach ignition coil cover, making sure the cover is firmly in place.
  2. If removed, connect the ignition coil and radio interference capacitor, then install the ignition coil retaining screws. Tighten the retaining screws to 25-35 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  3. Connect the coil wire, then engage any electrical connectors that were removed.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Ignition Coil - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Detach the 8 or 11-pin harness connector, as applicable, from the coil and module assembly.
  3. Remove the ignition assembly-to-camshaft housing attaching bolts.
  4. Carefully remove the ignition assembly from the engine.
If the spark plug boots present a problem coming off, it may be necessary to use a special removal tool, first twisting and pulling upward on the retainers.
  1. Remove the ignition coil housing-to-cover bolts/screws.
  2. Remove the cover from the coil housing.
  3. Detach the ignition coil harness connectors from the coil pack assembly.
  4. Carefully lift the coil pack out and remove the contacts and seals from the housing.
To install:
  1. Install new coil seals into the coil housing.
  2. Install the coil contacts to the coil housing and retain with petroleum jelly.
  3. Place the coil pack into the housing and connect the harness connectors.
  4. Assemble the cover to the coil housing and install the attaching bolts/screws. Tighten the attaching bolts/screws to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  5. Install the spark plug boots and retainers on the ignition assembly housing secondary terminals.
If the boots and retainers are not in place on the housing secondary terminals prior to installing the ignition assembly, damage to the ignition system may result.
  1. Position the ignition assembly to the engine while carefully aligning the boots to the spark plug terminals.
  2. Coat the ignition assembly-to-camshaft housing attaching bolts with an approved lubricant and install them into the housing.
  3. Tighten the attaching bolts to 16-19 ft. lbs. (22-26 Nm).
  4. Attach the harness connector to the ignition coil module assembly.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Start the engine and check for proper operation and performance.

Ignition coil for 1993 civic


best way to test is connect to car and see if it gives spark with engine turning, because it gets ground pulse from the distributer,if pulse id not coming to ignition coil, then you need to change distributor.
