SOURCE: 1982 rabbit shift linkage

There is a plastic ball that is in the shift linkage that also wears and is usually not included in the shift linkage bushing kit. It is attached to a metal piece and is bolted to the shift linkage. This is generally the problem if you already replaced the bushings.

Sometimes the linkage is out of adjustment but I would make sure that the ball is not worn first. They generally cost $5.00 - $8.00 or so.

If you need to adjust the linkage you can try the following, but if the bushings or the ball is worn adjustment will not do any good.

There is an adjustment on the shift rod that goes from the shifter to the transmission. It is a rod slipped into a tube with a locking collar or clamp.

The way that I do this is to make sure that your vehicle is in 1st gear and then loosen the bolt on the clamp.

Make sure that the clamp is loose enough so that the shaft can slip in the tube. Put the shifter in the 1st gear position and then tighten the clamp.

You may need to fiddle with this a little to get it in just the right spot.

This is much easier if you have an assistant.

SOURCE: automatic shift lever won't shift the truck into

the linkage has slipped and is not in the notch on the shift lever so slide he shift lever into place then tighten the bolt down so it will hold the shifter on the trasnmisson, this is caused by a loose nut on the shifter nut.

Why will my 2001 ford escape only go in reverse

does the shifter itself go thru full shift range? forward and back, but it will only catch in reverse? if so sounds like the linkage has loose bolt or joint. check your likage, underhood,(on column) and on transmission, likely cause is linkage plate on transmission (bolt is loose)

Shifter moves with moderate effort, but car does not shift out of first gear on a 91 cavalier...is that shift linkage bending? wont shift to second ,etc, running or not. will the linkage from a 92 sunbird...

IT IS HARD TO SAY WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, 1ST YOU REPAIR ANY SHIFT LIKAGE ISSUES THEN YOU MOVE ON TO THE TRANS IF THE PROBLEM STILL ISN'T CURED, THE 92 LINKAGE WILL NOT WORK.

The bolt came out of the gear likage how to fix it.

yes i would suspect the bolt has come from the change linkage inside the car,you need to take it to the auto-shop and get them to put it back and adjust it again. its not a big job so i they should not charge alot.adrian;;;;

My chevy aveo won't go into gear. The gear shift says you are in Drive but the car acts as if it is in park

Most likely the shifter cable broke or became disconnected. Have someone shift the car (engine off, parking brake on) while someone else watches the transmisssion linkage to see if it moves. If it does move there is an internal transmission problem if it doesn't it is just a problem with the cable.
