Starter fluid won't work if the starter won't turn the engine over.
Get the battery load tested...it may not have enough juice to start the truck but have enough to light up the lights
check your fuses and battery connections at the starter. Is the anti theft light flashing? If it is that's your problem. Wait 10 minutes insert the key...wait for the theft light to go out before trying to start.
if that doesn't work you will need to get the starter checked...which means you will have to take it off.
CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOR POWER TO GAUGES TO SEE IF THEY WORK WHILE IGNITION IS IN THE ON POSITION.IF NO CHECK THE 40 AMP IGNITION FUSE.IF FUSE GOOD IGNITION SWITCH IS BAD OR HAS A LOOSE OR BROKEN WIRE.IF FUSE GOOD ALL GAUGES IS WORKING.I BE LOOKING AT STARTER AND STARTER SOLENOID.REMOVE THEM HAVE AUTO ZONE TEST STARTER.OR YOU CAN GET A REMOTE STARTER SWITCH AND SET OF BATTERY CABLES.HOOK BATTERY CABLES TO A BATTERY.WITH STARTER OUT OF CAR TAKE BATTERY CABLES HOOK NEGATIVE BATTERY TO STARTER BODY FOR GOOD GROUND.TAKE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE HOOK TO STARTER POSITIVE TERMINAL WHERE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE GOES.THEN HOOK THE REMOTE SWITCH RED WIRE TO STARTER POSITIVE TERMINAL AND THE OTHER REMOTE SWITCH WIRE TO THE S OR SWITCH TERMINAL ON STARTER SOLENOID.PRESS THE REMOTE SWITCH IS STARTER RUNS GOOD WITH NO FUNNY NOISES ITS GOOD IF STARTER DONT RUN THE STARTER SOLENOID OR STARTER IS BAD. BEFORE REMOVING BATTERY CABLES TURN OFF RADIO SO YOU WONT LOSE YOUR RADIO PLAYING CODE.
make sure you have power getting to your starter when you crank. check the small nut on the starter. should have 12 v or very close to it. this will tell you if your getting power to the starter or if somethign before the starter and something maybe with your anti theft system or not. its hard to say online cause of that anti theft. doest the light flash at all? the anti theft light?
if your getting power to the starter when you crank make sure your getting good power to the starter by turning on the head lights and see if they dim. a good starter will cause the headlites to dim when attempting to start. if nothing dims check connections. or assume bad starter motor. make sure your also getting power to the main starter stud as well.
Have you tried to jump power directly on the starter? make the BIG power cable touch the small one on the starter with it still in the engine.(power touching the starter solenoid) use a LONG screwdriver to make them touch. you will not get shocked just make sure you only touch those 2. it will spark a bit but just hold it on there. if your starter clicks and does nothing then you have a bad starter. if it works then you have other problems. If it starts to smoke stop and make sure your engine is not frozen by turning the crankshaft with a large ratchet.
make sure voltage flows WHEN cranking also. check voltage at the starter while cranking. make sure it maintains 12 volts. or very close to it. nothing below 10.8 volts. check for corrosion on battey cables if voltage drops below that. that shows you have a curremt problem. also check grounds. or make new ones you know are good.
