Question about Cars & Trucks
I was driving and shifted into 2nd a little hard and now the gear leaver moves freely between 1st and 2nd gear and doesnt move to the right at all. shifter leaver "reads" neutral but actually is in 1st gear
If it is s manual box remove the gear lever tower from the top of the box and see what damage was done to the bottom of lever and/or lever pivot pin in the tower. Remember normal gear boxes require a gentle shift to allow the syncro rings to work properly and if you want to do racing changes get yourself a specially built box.

SOURCE: shifting lever doesnt lock
Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.

Sounds like you got a mistry shifter. It might just be out of ajustment, or just plane wore out. If its an old shifter you would be money a head to buy a new one and put it in. Summit racing sells them, Heck i'am not real sure but you might be able to get one at auto zone, or napa, or advance auto. There just a phone call a way. They might even sell kits to repaire yours.

Purchase a gear shift repair kit for your car. They are pretty cheap. About 20 bucs. The ball and bushings are probably worn.
