Question about 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue

1 Answer

Car was running fine, now won't crank. It turns over. Some told me timing chain, distributor, injectors, spray carb spray in throttle body or something like that. Can you please help me?

My 1999 olds intrigue 3.8 was running fine then wouldn t crank after being home about an hour. I was told by some, possibly timing chain. Check the firing of spark plug and it was fine. Should I try spraying carb or something in the throttle bottle or somewhere. Or can you just help me please?

I filled up with gas on my way home from work. The car acts like it is trying to crank. Could I have water in the tank, if so what can I do to find out?

Thank you for all your helpful information. I did try the starting fluid before I got your comment. We tried the "touch the spark plug while someone turn the ignition thing," it was so funny. I didn't want to do it and my neice said, "you turn the key I'll hold the thing to the spark plug." I gave her a wrench with rubber on it and you should have seen her eyes. It was soooooo funny, we laughed til our stomachs hurt. I can just see my dad laughing his **** off up in heaven. He died last May 29th. He was a "jack of all trades" but specialized in a/c, refrigeration, appliance repair, and sale, but could do it all. I learned how to work on things from him. He even talked me through rebuilding the heads on a car once.

Anyway, I had my car towed to a local repair shop and it turned out to be in need of spark plugs and new wires. $257.10. Boy was I mad that we didn't try that. Could have saved me $157.10 or more.

I just wasn't having any problems with the car until I bought that gas. It wasn't missing, spitting and sputtering or nothing, just no other indications that would be the problem. I bought the car from a friend last year who said he had those things done and probably did, just was time for more I guess. I sure miss my dad, he would have known what to do and had the tools to test the stuff (meters and sort).

Again, thanks for everyones comments and quick responses, this was indeed another learning experience for us ladies. We definately learned how to remove and check alot of things on a car for future references. She's recently separated and I am just single with a 18 year old.

You are saying that the engine will crank or turn over but will not start? If so then you must fine out if the engine has both fuel and spark. after that you can get into the right direction. You can use starting fluid to see is there is a fuel issue. Read the directions on the can. Using too much can harm you and/or your engine.

It is possible, If you remove the fuel filter and empty its contents into a clean plastic container. Look for two liquid layers. The fuel will sit on top of the water. If your not sure by the sample then get another person to help you and hold the fuel line (before the filter) from the tank. Into your container and cycle the key from run position to off until you get your desired sample. Did you try the starting fluid? If so, what was the result? When you get your sample it should be clear, maybe a slight yellow hue. It should be clear (not cloudy) or brown (rusty). Make sure you identify your sample correctly. If it looks like gas make sure its not just all water. A quick test could be dipping a peice of Styrofoam into it. If its fuel it will quickly dissolve it. Let me know how you make out.

My Daewoo espero is not starting The fuel is getting to the engine The starter is turning The battery is full. The distributor is fine What can the problem be?

Spray some carb cleaner into the throttle body and see if it cranks. It may be getting fuel pressure without a control signal commanding the injectors open.

98 Chevy 1500 Running down road dies Has fuel. Has spark.

If it has spark to the plugs, normal compression, and fuel, it should start. So assuming it does have normal compression, I would want to know if it will try to start by spraying carb cleaner into the throttle body to substitute the injector spray. One of the three components is missing.
Another thing to check is the distributor cap and rotor to make sure spark is reaching all of the plugs at the right time.

Sounds like a faulty fuel pressure regulator, or possibly the MAF sensor.

Was running fine on interstate, started losing power on hills, cut off would not restart

When it fails to start-- do you have spark or injector pulse or
fuel pressure-- while cranking--?

Could be a crank sensor --but replacing parts with no testing,
is not the way to go --learn how to test components

Could be a crank sensor failed, fuel pump or timing issue,
chain or belt whatever it has

Look at Professional Scan Tool Data--codes or not, that is
always where you start & check the battery out is always a first
step as well

1997 Acura CL 2.2, car cranks but will not start, does not have spark. When trying to start the D4 light will blink. Have changed fuel pump, distribitor, injector relay, computer, ignition relay under dash...

have u checked ur timing chain/belt? or even the crankshaft sensor? The crank sensor (if bad or broke) will cut out the spark to ur plugs. hope this helps

1983 LTD Crown Victori, 302, Throttle body carburetor, Will crank when cold but after it has been running you can turn it off. It will not run again until gas is manually dripped into engine.

Your model should be a throttle body injected engine.
So no float and no jets like a carb.
Have you checked fuel pressure before and after cranking ?
Are the injectors spraying fuel when you crank it ?
If not, do you have power and a ground signal for the injectors ?

My truck sat up for probably 3 or 4 years cranked and run fine yesterday but today it wont crank at all any ideas?

If it won't crank over, it's not a fuel issue, but a starting circuit issue. The gas may be stale, but if tank was full all that time, I don't think that would be a problem.
Pull off the small wire on the starter solenoid, and see if it has power when key is held in crank position. If power there, the starter or solenoid or the battery connections from battery to starter need to be checked or tested. If no power to solenoid when key is in cranking position, the ignition switch may be bad or the neutral safety switch (or the clutch start switch if a manual) or the starter relay needs to be checked.
If you get it cranking, and still no start, look down the throttle body bore and watch your injector spray pattern while the engine is cranking-you should see a fine, cone spray pattern coming from the bottom of the injector. If it just drips and no cone pattern, or no gas coming out, injectors need cleaning (probably from stale gas). Good luck.
