SOURCE: starter stays engaged
The starter relay on the fender is the most common cause of this condition. ,It is on passenger side feder in the engine compartment, it is round and the positive cable of the battery goes to it,

I had the same problem and I finally found the solution after taking the panels from the inside of the door. Ford makes these vehicles with plastic clips to hold the bar that releases the latch and after so much repetitive usage of them they break. so most likely you will need to go to a ford dealership to get these clips which are stupidly priced at $3.00 a piece. All you need to do is take out the old pieces and put in the new and they'll most likely last you for another 10 yrs. but that's not a guaranteed fix from Ford.

make sure you remove all door panel screws, you can use a mehanics rag to go behind door handle to remove horse shoe clip that holds door handle if you don't have the proper door tools , it is much easier with the correct tools you can buy they are cheap at autozone or kragens, sears... disconnect any door swtiches like door locks , power mirriors if equipped, then just pull up and out on door panel noting the plastic retainers on back of door panels... please rate help, thanks...
