Car wont stay running unless foot is on the gas

I was driving my car stalled and now it wont stay running unless foot is on the gas

    no cheak engine light is on but when i keep my foot on the gas it blows out black smoke and has a really funny smell

Withoutknowing if the check engine light is on it could be a variety of things including but not limited to the o2 sensor, throttle positioning sensor, and the MAF and MAP sensors. Best diagnosed by using an OBDII scanner to scan for codes. If no codes are present I would then check for the pressure coming from the fuel pump to make sure it is still functioning.

    With your last post it sounds as if you may have a clogged catalytic convertor. The smell proably is a cross between bad cheese and rotten eggs. Convertors can melt inside and cause back pressure, a lack of acceleration and stalling. Start the car and take a rag and hold over the end of the tail pipe to see if there is any back pressure. If not it may be a glogged convertor.

sounds to me like your catalytic converter may be clogged.

This could be a lot of things. IT could be the injectors or the fuel pump pressure, it could be the air intake, vacuum leak, etc.

is the CEL check engine light out running? (it comes on stalled, and is normal that)
stalled. engine stall. no year, now that makes this 10x impossible
and even more impossible no engine stated, (displacement or VIN)
F22? 2.3. 2.7? 3.0L?
if in usa, (no loctation stated ) open hood, look up, see tag?
see vacuum EPA map, see engine type? bingo.

so I wall answer in the generic, (ALL CARS gasoline)
fails hot or cold engine, does hot engine reach 180F and hold?
wow, how low was the oil, off end of stick, none?
stalling is caused by over 50+ things. (we do tests to find it fast )
we use tools, do you have tools, or can buy them, or do you just want
endless guessing. here is the path.
#1 stall maker is a stuck open EGR main valve, ignored during the turn up, clean it. make sure it close
in the macro,
1: bad engine, the hot engine can lose compression and stall.
tool1 the $20buck compression guage.
2: bad spark, or timed wrong. gapped plugs wrong, wrong plugs used. bad wires sets, (old dizzy engines) bad COPS newer cars.
check for hot spark at all spark plugs, skip none.
3: bad fueling (too much or not enough
if engine runs perfect and only idle is too low 800 hot is normal
no DTC 300s misfires, then maybe the ISC is just dirty.
we clean the EGR and ISC every time.
if the EGR leaks, the fast right foot can save a stall but is hard.
if the ISC sticks closed, saving the stall is piece of cake, super easy
after all , you are adding the missing air.

91' bonneville ran out of gas and now it wont stay running unless my foot is on the gas


Check TPS -Throttle Position Sensor

May be worn out

Test it --not replace-- unless it has failed a test

Also the fuel pump maybe worn out as well

you can try to see if the fuel regulator is bad,sometimes there will be gas in the air cleaner\tube,it sounds to me that its getting too much fuel

Stalls will not stay running after wormming up


Throttle position senser might be going bad. I had in the same problem in my truck. It wouldn't stay running unless I had my foot on the gas and as soon as I let off, it would die. Try it. The sensers are relatively cheap at Auto Zone or somewhere similar. Around 30 bucks.
