Question about 2001 Saturn S-Series

High idle and misfire cylinder 1

Ok it always has high idle after it get warmed up sometime at a red light or when im shifting gears it will just rev up at 2 or 3 grand i can turn it off and turn it back on and it is ok. its misfireing bad in the 1st cylinder. the check engine light comes and goes if i let it idle a little bit the light comes on, if i take a long drive sometime during that drive it will go off. it was reading misfire cyl. 1 and the idle air valve. changed that it didn't help, thanged plugs and wires, aswell as coil packs. tried changing the ignition mod. i guess that is what the coil packs plug into that didn't help. i figured it was the gasket intake manifold, did a test today with break cleaner and it didn't effect the idle one bit. is there anything you know it could be?

    i willl check the mass air flow sensor tomorrow. if that isn't it ...do you have any idea what else it could be? it sounds awful and spudders out the exaust bad

    i had a shop change the plugs and wires im hoping they did it right ...and before that the compression was checked all around and was good. when my gas tank is full it seems my car doesn't ever idle high, then today after my tank dropped below 3/4 tank it has started with the high idle again. check engine light is still only reading misfire cy.1

This could have several causes however the most likely cause is either a throttle positioning sensor or the mass air flow sensor is bad. To check either of them you need to have an OBDII scanner that can read voltage. It would be best to send it to your local GM tech to have them do an onboard diagnostic rather than spend alot on parts that may not solve the problem.

    Also check the compression of cylinder #1. While I doubt it You very well may have dropped a valve since it is a misfire however that does not account for the high idle. Have you checked to make sure your firing order is correct after changing the plugs and wires?

Replace spark plugs and look at coils. Sounds like a misfire at idle. Car is trying to keep idle high enough with 1 or 2 cylinders misfiring. Car compensates then revs up as the cylinders catch and run again. These cars often have bad coils. Scan car and look for codes 301 through 306. Replace all plugs and if misfire comes back then replace the coils on the cylinders that occasionally misfire. Look at boots and spring wires on coils and replace coils that have bad boots.

The Codes 302 & 303 are cylinder misfire codes,google them

Spark Plugs have nothing to do with misfires,it would be rare in
a life time if one ever failed to fire

Forget the 316 just misfires on start up

A repair shop would be your best choice without knowledge,
reference material & test equip

For car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

ENGINE MISFIRE

There are few possibilities that can cause engine misfire issues. It can be issue with spark plugs or faulty spark plugs. Also get the compression test done for cylinders. If any of cylinder shows low compression then required, then that particular cylinder will cause misfire.

Also get obd codes scanned, the error code will let you know which cylinder is misfiring or all cylinders are misfiring.

Engine speed hunts on idle. Auto trans slow shift.


The fast idle valve is inside the throttle body. Sometimes it backs out and needs turned back in (it's threaded). This will cause the loping idle.

Get transmission filter changed with new fluid. Honda does not recommend transmission flushing.
