Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1999 Silverado brake bleeding issue

I have replaced the rear disc brakes on a 1999 silverado 4 x 4. Every thing is new, rotors and calipers. I can not get the brakes to bleed out. Just a little fluid on driver side only.

    was the pedal feel ok before you started?if it was,make sure you have calipers on correctly..make sure bleeder screws are at top to calipers..you may have put calipers on wrong sides..let me know how you make out..some more info would be good

I am trying to vacuum bleed my brakes. I replaced the pads and have no pedal at all. I cant draw any fluid through the bleeder nipple at all. Please help me out.

Try forcing a length of fish tank air supply tubing over the bleeder nipple (sometimes heating it up in hot water makes it go on easier) Place the end in a jar with some brake fluid in it. Open the valve and hit the brake a few times, keeping the hose end under the fluid in the jar, then let it sit, monitoring the master cyl so it does not go dry. Keep the jar lower than the caliper so there is some siphon effect...it should draw the air out of the system..When no more air bubbles out, close bleeder,.repeat at other wheel as well.

1999 silverado rear end shakes at all speeds. put brand new tires n balanced


You should have an alignment on all 4 wheels. Check that the rear axle has not shifted forward or backward on one side. If you have Rear Disc Brakes, have the Hub & Rotor checked for alignment. Does this shaking happen all of the time or just when turning? Does it only happen when you apply the brakes? A Rotor and Hub that is out of alignment will cause shaking. Also check that the Caliper Slide Bolts are lubricated, otherwise the caliper will not operate correctly and the inside of the rotor will wear out faster. This can cause shaking also.

I just replaced the rear brake pads on my 03 Silverado 1500. at first it drove fine, but Ive noticed lately that the rear (disk) brakes are dragging and causing excessive heat. There is a noticable shimmy...


Your calipers are sticking and causing your brakes to drag.Did you clean and lube the caliper slides before you reinstalled them and did you have the rotors turned?I have had this happen to me after doing a rear brake job.One or both of the calipers would stick and I had to replace them.Which means you will have to bleed the rear brakes.(Rear only)Hope this helps and let me know if you have anymore questions.Good luck.

Replace rear brake pads


Rear disc brake pads offer better performance and are not as affected by moisture like conventional brake shoe style brakes are. Rear disc brakes are similar to front disc brakes. The main difference is that rear disc brake systems must incorporate the emergency brake system. There are two methods widely used for the emergency brake with rear disc systems. The first system is a brake shoe inside the brake disc that is actuated by the emergency brake lever. The second is a screw style actuator inside the brake caliper. When activated the brake pads are forced into the brake disc and held tightly by the emergency brake lever.
READ COMPLETELY BEFORE STARTING
Step 1 - Identify Rear Disc Brake Components
rear_brake_pads.jpg Rear disc brake assembly includes; rear brake disc, rear brake pads, brake caliper mount and a caliper mounting screw. (Note: Some vehicles do not have the rotor mounting screw.)
Step 2 - Removing the Rear Brake Caliper Mount Bolts
rear_brake_pads_2.jpg To replace rear brake pads and rotors the rear brake caliper needs to be removed. First loosen the rear brake caliper mount bolts and remove them. Turn counter clockwise.
Step 3 - Lift Rear Brake Caliper from The Caliper Mount
rear_brake_pads_3.jpg After the caliper mount bolts have been removed, gently lift the brake caliper from the caliper mount. Inspect the caliper slides; they should move freely in the caliper mount. Remove rear brake pads and hardware.

Step 4 - Removing Caliper Mount Bolts
rear_brake_pads_4.jpg With a socket wrench or other appropriate removal tool, loosen the rear brake caliper mounting bolts. Remove bolts and lift the caliper mount and remove it from the vehicle. Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole. Tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub holding on tightly, using both hands. You do not want to drop the rotor.

Step 5 - Removing Rear Brake Rotor
rear_brake_rotor.jpg Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole, tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub, hold on using both hands and do not drop.

Step 6 - Install New Brake Rotor
rear_brake_rotor_2.jpg Check the new rotor against the old brake rotor to make sure they are the same size. Clean the mating surface on the wheel hub before the new brake rotor is installed. Reinstall rotor retainer screw.
Step 7 - Reset Rear Brake Caliper
rear_brakes_7.jpg Before new brake pads can be installed, the rear brake caliper must be reset. The reset tool winds the piston back into position so the new brake pads will fit. This style of brake caliper will not compress with a clamp tool; it can only be reset with the proper reset tool.
Step 8 - Reinstall Rear Caliper Mount and Install New Rear Brake Pads
rear_brake_rotor_3.jpg After the caliper has been reset, reinstall caliper mounting bolts and make sure the bolts are tight. Then match up the old brake pads to the new brake pads. They should be exactly the same except, of course; the old ones will be worn out. Check the new brake pads for proper fit and install any brake hardware that is required.
Step 9 - Remount Rear Brake Caliper
rear_brake_rotor_4.jpg Reinstall the brake caliper, align brake pad hardware and reinstall caliper mounting bolts. (Note: align the rear peg of the brake pad to the groove in the caliper piston.) Recheck and retighten all caliper and caliper mount bolts. Bleed brake system to relieve any air in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly. This operation forces the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors. DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE until proper brake pedal operation resumes. When test driving vehicle listen for any unusual noises during the operation of the brakes.
WARNING! Always have the vehicle under inspection on level ground, in park with the emergency brake on. Always wear protective eyewear, gloves and necessary clothing before inspection or work begins. Never crank an engine over when anyone is near the battery or engine. Always have an operational fire extinguisher close by, obey all first aid instructions in the event of an injury. Never stand in front or behind a vehicle when cranked over or running. When engine is cranked over keep hands and clothing away from rotating components. Never move a car without proper brake pedal operation.

From pads may be low causing the rear brakes to over brake and the anti-lock kicks in. Could be a sticking caliper piston and last the proportioning valve may need bleeding as it is offset.....

Rear brake job


pull the two bolts holding the caliper on and pull the caliper off now get a C clamp and compress the piston all the way into the caliper now remove the two bolts in the caliper hanger and remove the hanger now the caliper should just pull off ( if corroted hit it with a hammer ) now just put every thing back to gether the way they came off...............WHEN DONE WITH THE BRAKE JOB MAKE SURE TO START THE TRUCK AND PUMP THE BRAKES UNTIL THE PEADLE IS HARD. YOUR PEADLE WILL GO RUTE TO THE FLOOR AT LEAST ONE TIME MAYBE MORE.

You will may want to check your calipers to make sure the pistion or pistons depending on your truck are pushing the brake pad against the rotor> While you are down there you might want to check out the rotor and brake pads as well. To check the rotors make sure there isn't any hot spots due to over heating your brakes as well as an out of round rotor. To check the pads just have a quick look at them to see if there is any scoring or uneven pad wear. remember that uneven pad wear can also be caused by the calipers

How do I remove rear rotors for a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd


First....raise the vehicle safely, and remove the tire.
Second....get the tools to remove the brake caliper, and then remover the caliper and brakes.
Third....Get the tools to remove the caliper BRAKET that hold the caliper in place, Now after this is removed you'll have to use a rubber mallet or some type of bangin object to losen the brake rotor and it should pop or slide off. I've changed the rear rotors with my dad on our 03 silverado 1500hd, Hope this goes well, please rate thanks... Charles

The rear brakes grind after replacement of rotor and rear pads


check retaining clip on hand brake shoes behind rear rotor,check if shoes arent ondone from clip,check calyper and guide bolts for binding.
