1999 suburban front brake rotor - need mininum thickness

I need the mininum thickness for a 1999 k1500 4wd suburban front brake rotor. They use to cast the mininum thickness in the rotor, but this rotor only has two numbers BL16Y and 616. .616 is way to thin (less than the cooling fins) your help is appreciated

Severe wheel wobble when braking on steep decents

It is not wheel wobble but vibration from the front brakes. The front brake rotors have worn unevenly (known as disc thickness variation - DTV) and when this occurs you will get vibration from the front rotors as you apply the brakes and it is especially noticeable when braking on down hill runs. DTV is usually caused by poor alignment of the rotors on the hub. In other words sloppy installation procedures.

You will need to replace both the rotors and brake pads on the front and make sure the business that does the work properly checks the rotor for run out.

Changing rotors and brakes on ford expedition 99

I also have a 1999 model. What parts you want to use really depends on how much money you can spend. You can have the rotors turned (recut) but it takes time and if you want to keep the vehicle; new rotors will start out with the same potential life. Recut rotors will be different thicknesses and thin rotors will fail more quickly. You could end up with 4 different thicknesses.

The old brake linings will show how the calipers are working. You want even wear. You can also have Emergency brakes linings inside the rear rotors. With ABS and Traction control the wheel sensors can be fouled with brake debris so it is important for the E brakes to be in good shape.

I prefer Ceramic pads. They cost more, but are more heat resistant for towing and do not show brake dust. At least put them in front as most of the wear is in front. There is also a COP car pad with also works well but shows dust as it wears.

Tips for removal- Rust can be a big problem. The rotors will swell around the hubs in back of the rotor. A Dremel or cold chisel is necessary to remove the rust on the hub. Plenty of Rust solvent is needed. Eye protection is a must. You will need to draw in the Caliper pistons so you should have a big C clamp (Big Lots store) and use an old lining pad to press the pistons back. Also remove the brake rmaster cylinder cap before pushing in brake pistons.

New hardware is recommended and lube the slides with high temperature grease. Thats about it. Good Luck to you.

Brakes pulsate when stopping vehicle but I have 70% front brakes and 40% back brakes left.

Your brake rotors may be warped, which causes the pulsating you are experiencing. It's ok to drive it like this (although annoying), so if it is driving you crazy, you can have the rotors 'turned' (ground down to eliminate any high spots) or just replace them with new rotors. An automotive shop/parts store needs to measure the thickness of the rotors to determine if the rotors are thick enough to allow them to be turned. Check the price on new ones anyway, as sometimes the price difference is minimal.

1999 Chevy tahoe 2dr Brake shudder intermitant hard pedal.

You probably need to surface the rotors and the drums. I have gotten brand new rotors that were so warped that they were below min. thickness (not kidding) after surfacing them. Needless to say, they went back to the parts store. So now I surface every new rotor that I install. Happens to rotors way more than drums, but have hade a couple of drums that were warped when new so I check them before installing them. Good luck. Hope this helps.
