MAF cleaning I have heard you can clean the MAF sensor with a carb spray or something similar. I would like to know what this entails and why they say to be gentle.

According to almost every manufacturer, it's not recommended or even possible to clean the delicate wires. Of course, they're selling those sensors, so their motivation might be suspect. Try cleaning it first--what do you have to lose? I used to use aerosol carb cleaner, but CRC now makes MAF Sensor Cleaner it's new and less prone to dissolving other components in the MAF sensor. Do yourself a favor and remove the MAF sensor from the vehicle before attempting to clean it. Also, I'd make sure the air filter housing, air filter and all associated ducting are intact, clean inside and not leaking dirt. This will keep you from needing to clean or replace the MAF sensor anytime soon. You have to be gentle because the wires in the sensor are exrtremely fragile. If you poke it with the plastic spray guide you'll ruin it. Let it thoroughly dry before replacing it.

Some you can. The mass air flow sensor has a small wire going through it. the car's computer trys to heat the wire up and the air going by it to the motor tryes to cool it down. this tug of war is how the computer knows how much fuel to add. Dirt can get on the wire and act as insolation.Causing the car's computer to think it has more air going in and needs more fuel. You can take the mass air sensor out and gently spray the inside with carb. cleaner to clean the wire.Gently!!! Don't blow it dry. Let it dry a few secs. on its own.

yea, I agree with rjbeg123. A new sensor can cost $5746846964.00 (a bunch)

The other suggestions are very good. I would like to add:
Make sure a vacuum leak, low fuel pressure or a bad O2 sensor is not fooling the system into a lean condition. If it is the MAF and a cleaning restores operation that's well and good. Keep the air intake filter clean to minimize the chance this happens again.

How do i clean maf sensor and throttle body

Autozone, carquest ect. sell MAF sensor cleaner. Do not touch the sensor because it will most likely break. Pull the throttle body off and spray it down with the MAF cleaner. Brake cleaner is supposed to work but cannot verify that in all vehicles and sometimes carb clean will work depending on the vehicle.

2004 ford taurus dohc doesnt want to idle when cold and when warm at stop signs after driving for awhile it acts up like its flooding out. it will idle warm

Sounds like an O2 sensor, however you might try cleaning the MAF sensor in the air intake hose with carb cleaner (blow it out after spraying it and put it back in). MAF sensors are expensive and you can clean them with spray cleaner or starting fluid and usually not have to buy one. O2 sensors are cheaper and won't cleanup using this procedure.

Hi. Please help!! I need instructions on how to clean a 2001 Volvo S60, 2.4 MAF Sensor. Can I use an electronic board cleaning spray - the one I have evaporates and leaves no residue. Any...

You can probably use the spay you suggest. For years, I used carb cleaner made from various solvents, some of them fairly corrosive, with no ill effects.
However, remember that the wire in your MAF runs red hot. Corrosive halogenated solvents may be hard on it. That is why the auto parts store sells spray specifically for this purpose. Is MAF cleaner spray worth the extra money? I don't know, but now that it is available, I use it just to be on the safe side. MAFs are expensive.

I cleaned the MAF sensor and wires, I also replaced the MAF sensor. The engine is still hesitating, but only when it is very cold outside. Should I try cleaning the wires again?

is the check engine light on?

Do not physically touch the heated wires, they are ceramic coated and sensitive. Only spray tehm With carb cleaner or MAF sensor cleaner.

It sounds like you are running lean. IF your TPS is adjustable, it may need adjusting. TPS = throttel position sensor. Other than that, a bad intake air temperature sensor or bad upstream O2 sensor should turn on your check engine light.

Changed battery in 1998 z28 camaro and cleaned K&N air filter service engine light came on a couple of days later. tried disconnecting battery for 20 minutes did not work.

I've heard that if you have a K&N filter, the oil applied to the filter can vaporize and get sucked thought the intake. The problem could be that this oil gets baked onto the MAF sensor. You may want to try and clean the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner available at a parts store. Do not use a brush on your sensor. Just spray, soak, spray, soak... until clean and shiny.

2004 Toyota Corolla, dosnt Idle at all, have to give it gas

I would start with cleaning the MAF sensor and checking the resistance with an ohmmeter. Any shop specializing in imports should be able to tell you what the acceptable resistance parameters are. Use carb cleaner on the contacts, and let it air dry. DON'T try to towel dry it, as this could irreversably damage the sensor. If that doesn't work, I would check the throttle position sensor.

I need to clean my Mass Air Flow Sensor on my 92 Chevy Corsica and am not sure how.

I can't tell you the exact procedure for disassembling the MAF in a Corsica, unfortunately. I can tell you that if you are able to locate and disassemble it, you should handle it with extreme care. The monofilament wires are extremely easy to break. Do not use any object to touch, wipe, brush or scrub at them. I personally don't recommend cleaning the MAF on any vehicle, but if you find that you must, you should use ONLY an electronic cleaning spray. CRC sells an excellent electronic cleaning spray that is non-damagine to plastics. Simply spray the MAF down very thoroughly with the spray and allow it to air dry before reassembly. Beyond that, anything you do to it would be likely to damage it. Any other types of cleaners, such as carb cleaner, would be likely to cause the plastic parts and other delicate electronic components to break down and be ruined. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Did you buy a Ford MAF sensor? There are some brands that are not reliable or accurate. Buy a Ford MAF sensor, if your mechanic has decided that the MAF is faulty. You may have a leaking fuel injector, bad coolant temp sensor, bad oxygen sensor, dirty air filter, clogged exhaust system.
