Question about 1994 Honda Civic

1 Answer

Car wont start

I have a 1994 Honda Civic EX and it wont start now. It was working on and off for a bit but now it won't start at all. Everything else powers on, but when I turn the key the only sound I hear is the fuel pump turning on and kind of a click or buzz noise when I turn the key to start it. Would anybody be able to tell me what it could be. I have went to auto parts stores and had them test my battery they say it is fine. one said that the alternator was putting out 60something and should be putting out 90 something but every turns on so I don't think that is the problem. Thank you

My room mate thinks it could be the ignition switch or the starter because the lights don't dim when I turn the key

How do I bypass it with a screwdriver.. you have some kind of detail you can send to my email or something?

There is a round plastic disc with a metal tab on it located inside your distributor. It's called a pick-up coil. What happens is when you're driving, this plastic disc shrinks from heat and causes the little metal tab to not make contact with your distributor cap. The one for my truck was approximately $40. My problem was erratic like yours until one day, it wouldn't start at all. I put $300-400 of parts in it until I changed this. Started right up. Honda cars are notorious for this. Hope this helps and good luck!

Your additonal comment sheds a little more light on the problem. It does sound like a starter issue. You can bypass the solenoid on the starter with a screwdriver and this should provide enough assurance that you've found the gremlin. Good luck!

1994 honda civic ex

yes indeed number one see if there is any spark, if no spark look at your distributor roter first, i suggest you replace this as well if you haven't already.. you can pick them up at any auto shop for like less than 10 bucks. if it is a second hand distributor that has been sitting in a junk yard for months, chances are one of the wires are corroded or something.. get a new one if so they are only like 30 bucks and i think you get a discount if you give them your old one for the core.
