Question about 2005 Ford Freestyle
Do you live in high salted areas? If so, My freestyle had the same problem. It's the joint in the steering column (you can see it from underneath the vehicle) Just keep it lubed. I had to replace mine because it had worn out. Expensive. Also, it could be the bearings on top of your front struts. Dirt gets into it and binds it up. Poor engineering designs.

I recently had the rack replaced on my 2005 freestyle along with both struts, caps, bearings, tie rod ends and ball joints and the steering was stillhard. i then sprayed a lot of wd-40 on the steering joint which attaches to the rack and it fixed the problem. Good luck.

Unusual on something this new but sounds likt the fluid needs changing. have the fluid changed and maybe add an additive something like slick50 this helps the lubrication especially under hard driving conditions. If the problem persists then jack up the front of the car and turn the steering via the roadwheels and feel for a notchy movement if the is present then it is possible the rack is beginning to wear.
