Do you live in high salted areas? If so, My freestyle had the same problem. It's the joint in the steering column (you can see it from underneath the vehicle) Just keep it lubed. I had to replace mine because it had worn out. Expensive. Also, it could be the bearings on top of your front struts. Dirt gets into it and binds it up. Poor engineering designs.

I recently had the rack replaced on my 2005 freestyle along with both struts, caps, bearings, tie rod ends and ball joints and the steering was stillhard. i then sprayed a lot of wd-40 on the steering joint which attaches to the rack and it fixed the problem. Good luck.

Unusual on something this new but sounds likt the fluid needs changing. have the fluid changed and maybe add an additive something like slick50 this helps the lubrication especially under hard driving conditions. If the problem persists then jack up the front of the car and turn the steering via the roadwheels and feel for a notchy movement if the is present then it is possible the rack is beginning to wear.

Power steering, steering is stiff.Fluid level is up and pump pulley not slipping.Wheels off the ground, ignition on and trying to turn the wheels will not turn left or right. When pushing on the wheel.

If it is belt driven power steering it will not work with the engine switched off, engine must be running for power assistance to work unless you have electric power steering.
However, with the wheels in the air they should move unlless you have another issue, in which case you will need the assistance of a trained mechanic

You might have burnt up the power steering pump by now.

Power steering stiff and fluid not leaking

Stiff power steering can be the result of low or contaminated power-steering fluid (it may need to be changed or flushed). A loose serpentine belt, a worn out power-steering pump, tie-rod/s or ball-joint/s may be seized, or possibly the rack and pinion may have an internal failure. I listed it in the order that I would check all related items. If you have any questions, findings, or details, please write back. Good luck.

My power steering seems to be very stiff.Have lots of fluid. What to do ?

even thoe your power steering pump is full the pump its self could be bad the fluid just bypass in the pump and you loose the power because of that the only way to check is to have a service station do a pressure test at that point its easyer just to change the old one out hope this helps good luck

Power steerin pump on a 2007 Ford Freestyle has been whining as if it were low on fluid. Checked fluid and it was a little low so I added some. Still making the same noise only worse. Check the fluid after...

It is common for the fluid to look "bubbly", but unfortunately if it is full and continuing to whine it is the pump itself. They are also throw away pumps because they cannot be serviced or be taken apart, also the cost of that route would over rule replacing it. Hope this helps, let me know

It has power steering. Why does it steer so hard?

Do you hear noises while turning the wheel at low speeds or stationary? If you hear a whining noise check the power steering fluid level. A low fluid level would make a whining noise as well as cause stiff steering. If you hear a squealing noise check the power steering belt tension. A slipping belt would cause stiff steering also. If you hear no abnormal noises check to make sure the power steering belt is there. If all of the above check out ok you may have a bad power steering pump, steering gear or a blockage in a pressure line.

My car has a whining noise in the power steering and sometimes gets extremely loud. We checked to see if it needed powering steering fluid and it was full. Could the power steering be going out and is this...

this noise is caused by a defective power steering pump, it is only covered if u have an extended warranty that covers other than the "powertrain" powertrain covered parts are engine, transmission and differential.

Stiff steering

Check fluid and make sure it filled enough,(make sure that its actually power steering fluid in there and not something else added by mistake for ex. antifreeze etc) make sure there are no leaks. Check power steering belt and and make sure its tight NOT loose or slipping. From personal experience with these vehicle you MOST likely cause of this problem if all the items above are GOOD is a bad power steering pump.
