Question about 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

1 Answer

04 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi, 55,000 miles Puff of smoke on start up

This only occurs after this Quad truck hasn't been driven in a couple of
days. This is only on start up and doesn't do it every time. You can kick it in the **** for passing etc and it does not smoke. Even pull a 16ft trailer with tractor up a hill and it doesn't smoke. I don't know anything about these newer vehicles. Over all the truck runs good, No codes etc. Thanks

Thanks, I was wondering if changing from reg oil to synthetic might cause this. This last oil change they put Synthetic instead and I never notice the puff until the last oil change. I don't need to replace rubber valve seal? Thanks

The most common cause of this is small amount of oil leaking from the valve stem seals of into the combustion chamber, it only takes a tiny amount of oil to cause the puff of smoke, after the engine starts the heat expansion seals them back up, unless the engine is using more than 1 quart every 1000 miles it is nothing to be concerned about.

About synthetic, it is much "slippery" than conventional oil so no I don't recommend it as a fix for your puff of smoke problem, but as a way to extend the life of th engine bearings and piston rings yes i highly recommend it, remember this is not a problem that i would be overly concerned about unless u begin to use excessive amounts of oil.

Yes u can replace the valve stem seals and that will help, some of the oil may also be due to valve guide wear, but that is no usual with this engine. If I were u i would just live with it until it is a real problem.

There is no standard interval for the CE/MIL light. You need to get the codes scanned at a local AP store to see what codes you have.

Engine runing rough

This code is most likely not related to the problem, it sounds like you may have picked up some contaminated gasoline, maybe has water in it or other like dirt.
