If engine overheats and I remove thermostat does it help?


This is the primary cause of engine overheating. Possible leak points include hoses, the radiator, water pump, thermostat housing, heater core, head gasket, freeze plugs, automatic transmission oil cooler, cylinder heads and block. Perform a pressure test.

Excursion over heating


Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. There are many things that can cause a vehicle to overheat. First, make sure your fans are working properly. Second, make sure there is fluid in the vehicle (coolant). Make sure the coolant cap is on tight and shows no signs of being loose. Make sure the radiator is working and there is coolant inside it. Make sure it is not damaged. Make sure you are not leaking coolant. Scan the entire engine. If it is, you may have a major issue. It will need taken apart and looked at. Now, after you check all of this, check the following. The most common issue is a bad thermostat or a sticking thermostat. I would check that first. Next, it would be a bad water pump, valve, or impeller. These two are the most common. It could also be a bad head gasket. Anyone of these can cause overheating Roger. I hope this helps you. Over heating


could be a lot of things, most common is a leak in the system that allows the radiator coolant levels to drop causing it to overheat, but you should have seen a low coolant warning light come on in the dash, most cars have this feature. Second most common is a bad thermostat that is stuck closed and will not open at its design limit..you can check this out by seeing if you top radiator hose has water running through it when you put your hand around it you can feel the water flow. another least common is a loose serpentine belt or you water pump is actually bad. look at the pumps weep hole is water coming out of it? and can you move the pumps pulley side to side? you should have no play at all in the pulley. Also check your idler pulley for proper spring return tension.

Overheats ive tried the obvious solutions and it still overheats any suggestions


note if it overheats on the freeway or in city driving. If it overheats soon after you leave the house then in has to be the thermostat. If it overheats at city driving where there are lots of stop and go driving or while you are parked with the motor running, then check the radiator fan function properly. If it takes a while to overheat and tend to do it when driving on the freeway, it is a clogged/dirty radiator. If it looses coolant due to a leak, then it will also overheat. The least likely cause which don't even pertain to newer car is a retarted timing. A retarted timing causes a car to loose noticable loose of power accompanied by overheating. A retartded timing is usually common in older car where timing is adjustable by turning the distributor. Your car is exempt from this.

I dont think the transmission has anything to do with your overheating problem...Check to see if there is water in the oil...If there is water in the oil then it could have a head gasket problem..Did you ever replace the thermostat? If it is stuck then it would also cause overheating...Excessive exhaust backpressure because of a clogged catalytic converter could also cause overheating..Also check belt tension and condition. A loose belt that slips may prevent the water pump from circulating coolant fast enough and/or the fan from turning fast for proper cooling...Another thing it could be is a faulty Water pump -- Any wobble in the pump shaft or seepage would call for replacement. In some instances, a pump can cause an engine to overheat if the impeller vanes are badly eroded due to corrosion or if the impeller has come loose from the shaft. The wrong pump may also cause an engine to overheat. Some engines with serpentine drive belts require a special water pump that turns in the opposite direction of those used on the same engine with ordinary V-belts... Also check the Fan -- With mechanical fans, most overheating problems are caused by a faulty fan clutch, though a missing fan shroud can reduce the fan's cooling effectiveness by as much as 50% (depending on the fan's distance from the radiator) which may be enough to cause the engine to overheat in hot weather or when working hard.

My sklyark is overheating. I changed the thermostat and the starter! WTF is wrong???

Overheating


The thermostat is behind the upper radiator hose...remove the upper radiator hose and loosen and then remove the two bolts on the outlet (where the upper radiator hose ends) The thermostat is inside that outlet...Another thing to check is if there is water in the oil...If there is water in the oil then it could have a head gasket problem..Did you ever replace the thermostat? Car overheat frequently and at time the engine sound is very loud


Several things can cause this overheating. Have you recently done a:
1. Check Hoses for Leaks
2. Check Radiator for Leaks --- Also, Change Radiator Cap ( can loose pressure there if
cap is bad)
3. Check Water Pump for Leaks. If Water Pump is bad, you will hear a loud noise from it
4 Complete Tune Up? Should be done at least 1x a Yr. Depending on how much you drive the Vehicle. Includes: Plugs, Plug Wires, Gas Filter, Air Breather Filter, PCV Valve, Adjust Timing,
Check Belts -- see if worn
5. Changed your Thermostat & Gasket and have the correct degree Thermostat in the Vehicle?
6.. Had your Radiator Rod and Cleaned out?
7. Temperture Sending Unit (located near Thermostat) could be bad
8. 02-Sensor (Generally located in the Exhaust Manifold - needs a socket with a space in it
to allow the Socket to fit over this top wire of the 0-2 Sensor )
9. Change oil and oil Filter.
10. Change Gas Tank Cap ---

Do all this yearly ( except the Radiator Rod & Clean ( do every 2-3 yrs), and you should not have
any over-heating nor stalling out, etc. and should pass emissions as well.
