Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

a little more information would be helpful, does it choke when stopping or turning, or when it is in park.. It was be several things, like a vacuum hose, if the engine shakes it can be a tensioner.. Give as much detail as possible about what happens and when..

If the car doesnt do it all the time and the engine light doesnt come on, then my best guess is bad gas, it has water in it. some gas stations put water in them for example like Casey's. I had the same problem with my 2002 lancer oz and sometime as i putted gas in it and the next day when i stopped it shakes lil and sounds like it gonna die but it didnt do it all the time but what I did was buy HEET and poured it in the tank and left it over night and it worked just fine the next day. but if full tank now wait til half tank and put good gas in and then it works good. or half tank could wait til 1/4th tank or just go ahead and put it in and put new gas in it. I would buy the most expensive HEET as they are like 2.11 total with tax depending where your from. hope it helps you out. if not, then go and do what the others say or just take it in. my best guess is bad gas tho.

Hello and yes this can be bad gas. This also can be something that can be fixed with a simple fuel or air filter change as well. I would do a basic tune up of spark plugs and wires which may fouled out it sounds like, oil and filter, air filter, and fuel filter. I would also change the distributor cap and rotary button. These few tune up items may help your rough running automobile. If you have any other questions email me and I hope you resolve this issue.

Starts but won't stay running

Turn off all your accesories and turn the key forward, but dont start it. You should hear the pump kick on for 2-3 seconds. Prime the system a few times then start it. This will narrow your diagnosis

Fuel pump or not?

if you still have gas in the car when it dies out on you then it could be one of two things. the fuel filter is clogged or the fuel pump is going bad. the fuel filter is only gonna be a few dollars to be if you have someone put it one for you. if the problem consists then its the pump

My 94 jeep grand cherokee limited acted as though it was running out of gas then it died however it had plenty. now it starts some of the time and only stay running for a short while.

Sounds like a classic bad fuel pump...When the pump begins to fail, it overheats and binds. After a short wait, it cools off and runs again. However, a bad filter can often do the same thing. Replace the filter (good maintenence) and if the problem continues, change the pump.

Dies out and when you push on the gas it dies and will not stay started - have to power brake when idleing

if it is carburated it sounds like bad accelerator pump in carb, or plugged fuel filter. if you haven't changed the fuel filter recently i'd start with that.if that was done than you may have a bad carb accelerator pump. needs rebuild or replaced.

2000 silverado will start but wont stay running just dies.

I also agree it sounds like a fuel pump issue. Its easiest to remove the box (6 bolts {need impact wrench} disconnect wires at plugs and disconnect gas filler hose) and lift box up. A hoist is easiest but 6 people can lift it easily. The fuel pump can easily then be replaced. Takes about 1 1/2 hrs. to do entire job this way and its so much easier!
Good Luck!

Escalade won't start

check the fuel pump. there is an access port on the fuel rail underneath the intake manifold cover. it looks like a valve for putting air in a tire. at your local car parts store you can find a fuel pressure guage to make sure your getting the 45lbs psi that is needed to run the fuel system. if your not getting 45psi when you crank the engine replace the fuel pump. it is located in the gas tank. ( FYI ) If you run below a 1/4 tank of fuel the fuel pump is no longer covered with gas, and over heats. thats why most of the gm pumps go bad. D
