Question about 2004 Ford Ranger

1 Answer

04 ford ranger rod bearing

2004 ford ranger 3.0 auto 42,000miles
i was driving along towing a trailer that is within vehicle towing capacity, and the oil light came on i immediately pulled over and stopped the check engine light came on i had it towed home and hooked my scan tool up code p0340 cam sensor fault.
i had it towed to the dealer they did some testing and pulled the oil pan and told me it spun a rod bearing
it had plenty of oil (full synthetic since first oil change)

what causes a rod bearing to get spun?

could the timing chain jumping cause the rod bearing to spin? is the oil pump driven off the cam on this engine? or is it just a coincidence that these things happened at the same time?

i was the last oil change was about 2000 miles ago and it has had synthetic oil in it for about 40,000 miles changed about every 3-4,000 miles

Your vehicle timing chain jumped a sprocket
spinning a bearing means that the bearing does not get enough oil between it and, it's rod; causing the "babbet" a soft slippery metal lining the bearing; to heat up and, weld it's self to the crankshaft or. piston rod

the oill pump filter clogged due to the detergent action of the new synthetic oil scrubbing the old dry, hard petrolium oil flakes off of the cylinder walls and, the debris falling into the oil pan then: the crankshaft bearings and, the piston ring pins and, camshaft bearings started to seize due to not being bathed in oil by the pump through oil galleys and, slinger rings; friction heat then caused a drag on the engine until the piston rod bearing burned onto the crankshaft siezing and, causing the timing chain to jump the camshaft gear

Had you not been towing right after an oil change this probably would not have happened...a perfect storm

I know; but, when we drain the oil all the gunk just doesn't come out and, towing really heats up and, turbulates the oil in the pan blocking the oil filter

Vehicle towing capacity chart

A) Depends on the hitch you have and what it is rated for. Most car hitches (non truck or SUV) have a tounge weight rating of 500 LBS. This is the weight that is put on the actual connection of car and trailer. B) To not kill your transmission, do not exceed a total trailer weight of more than 1/2 the vehicles curb weight. (Dry weight of car full of fuel) Car transmissions and frames were not originally designed for towing, and exceeding 1500 LBS total trailer weight is considered dangerous (can get trailer weave and sway easily) and will cause excessive strain on drive train components. U-Haul has an online guide that will basically tell what type of trailer you can haul and its maximum allowed weight.

We have recently acquired a 2010 Fort Ranger, which have a 4 wires connection, but our trailer Venture 1080 have 6 wires with surge brake system. We want to know how to do this connection?

Is your trailer within the tow limit or your Ranger? If it is within the limit ... go to the auto parts store and get the proper plug that should plug directly into your Ranger to provide the signal you need. You will probably have to add a brake controller and find the wire for the brkes under the dash ... presuming your ranger is so wired.

Will my 2004 heavy duty 3/4 ton with a cummins diesel engine, 6 speed standard transmission tow a travel trailer that weighs 14,000 lbs???

The maximum towing capacity of 13,750 and you should not exceed what the manufacturer recommends as you can cause serious harm to your vehicle, yourself, and / or others.

When considering the maximum towing capacity, you also have to consider passenger weight, luggage, etc as all this will reduce the overall capacity... I.e. if you've got 1000lbs in the trunk and 3 passengers plus the driver, your capacity has already dropped to around 12,000
