My 1996 Hyundai Lantra has a blown head gasket

Just wondering how hard it would be to change this myself.
I have been quoted at least $1000 for the job to be done at the local garage

Once you take the head off it needs to be straightened , surface ground and then the valves need to be re-seated and the guides need to be checked and honed. After all this thye cam tunnels also nee to be check and if they are not straight they have to tunnel bored. All this can cost up to $800 plus $150 for gaskets $30 for new bolts and then labour so 1000.00 is a good price.

I beleive these are front wheel drives, alot of work if not experienced i wouldnt try it, it is alot of work, lots of parts and pieces.
if you have a manual and your good at fixing things you'll probably do ok, but i bet youll regret doing it,
good luck

How hard is it to replace a head gasket on a hyundai lantra

Most head gaskets are straight forward. If you can replace one on a front wheel drive Ford you can replace about any front wheel drive head gasket. The only difference would be where the bolts are to remove the intake and exhaust. After that everything else is about the same. The best advice i can give is take time to read a manual like Haynes. They have manuals for just about every vehicle on the market.

My head gaskets gone and the car makes a nasty knocking noise

if you think the head gasket is blown, and now you have a knocking in the engine, replace engine, bearings are probably bad due to water in the oil.you will need special tools to even do the head gasket and timing belt. sorrry no good news
