My GMC Jimmy '01 would slip from 2-wheel to 4-wheel drive while I was driving. First time it happened my mechanic replaced a small part. This last time, he couldn't find anything wrong so he popped the 2-4 out and disconnected the 4-wheel drive. Now I don't have the problem.
Possible solution..Expedition uses a vacuum solenoid on the firewall that controls vacuum to the 4-wheel drive actuator. Vacuum "unlocks" the 4-wheel drive, so you may have a leak in the line to the actuator so the 4-wheel drive is always on. Seems backwards, I know.

Many times this type of issue is caused by the motor that changes the transfer from 2 to 4 wheel drive, they get stuck, another issue is dirty fluid, have you had the transfwer case serviced?
