Run fuel injector cleaner through the engine.  If the injectors are clogged the car will hardly run.  Trust me I know, I had a beretta that had the same problem.  I took it to the dealership and when the machanic took it out for a test drive to see what the problem was he couldn't keep the car running without holding the gas to the floor.  Whe I asked him what he though the problem was he immediatly said the fuel injectors were clogged.  It comes from running cheap gas.  I was surprised to read in the owners manual that no less than 92 octan rated gas should be ran in the car.  He cleaned the injectors and the car ran fine.

Check your fuel filter and make sure it not plugged up, make sure you reinstall exactly as it came off.

I have a 96 Nissan XE and it starts sputtering and spitting when it hits 2500 RPM. My Guy said he cant fix it because he doesnt have the right port plug for the obd 2.

@jgamble112, sinse it is a specific rpm, 2500, which is where the rev limiter is usually set to stop the engine when reving up, it sounds like the engine control module, or computer as it is commonly called, this is what controls the rev limitermine had smae problem, same rpm, and in gear too, its only supposed to work when in nuetral, but sometimes the computer doesnt recognize the vehicle has been shifted, hope this helps
