Overheating 1995 bmw 525i 2.5L, new temp senor, new water pump, new thermostat, radiator is flowing, fan is spinning car still overheats, can anyone help plz

Overheating bmw ...no sign of water in oil..no water from exhaust .. over heats in minutes ..ok when moving ?? please help ..

You might have a blown head casket try due a pressure test on each cylinder and sometimes you can take a spark plug out 1 by 1 and just tap the ket so it cranks and see if water comes out of the cylinder

I have a 2001 525i bmw and have replaced thermostat and hoses but car still overheats when driving and coolant doesn't seem to pass through to engine. Could it be water pump? SUGGESTIONS PLEASE?


possibly water pump, air block. maybe the radiator is blocked. maybe it is time for a cooling system service. If problems persist

There's trapped air in the cooling system.
  • You need to remove the bleeder screw on top of the radiator when adding water to the expansion tank.
  • With the engine running, pour water into the expansion tank till you see air go out through the bleeder screw's hole.
  • Just keep adding water until no more air bubbles come out then just put the screw back in place.
  • Then fill the expansion tank to it's normal level/line.

1995 Honda Accord, 4 cylinder, overheating issues. Only overheats when in stop and go or slow traffic. No obviously leaks from the radiator. It's also brand new. Both fans come on when the temp gauge...


You may have air in the system, find the highest spot in the cooling system .Try open a hose and if there is a bleeder opening that.If it overheating at low speeds it is a water flow problem(volumn). I would suspect a bad water pump or a thermostat stuck partially open.The timing belt drives water pump and if it is loose then that could be a problem.if you replaced the radiator because of rust then the blades on water pump could be worn.Rust is abrasive.

Ok on my 95 bmw 525i I had a hole in radiator hose and repaired it but my bmw still overheated. Replaced thermostat and it still overheats. Fan comes on but top of hose is hot. After a few mins. of driving...


You should make sure there is no air in the cooling system. With the engine COLD open the bleeder screw, take the cooling cap off, make sure it is full, put your mouth on the neck and blow until a clear stream of antifreeze comes out the bleeder. Then close the bleeder, top up the coolant, and you should be good to go, unless there is another problem.

Hi, Sounds like you have tried about everything. Ok the aux. coolant switch is for the electric pump for the heater core will not cause an over heating condition just a longer warm up of the heater core. Has the cooling system been bleed properly if there is a trapped air pocket it will not let coolant circulate. Was the new thermostat installed correctly? They have a vent that needs to be towards the top or they trap air on the back side and cant take an accurate reading to open and close. Other areas to look at would be proper operation of the fan clutch, if they fail they can cause the fan to not lock up properly and supply enough air movement through the radiator. The aux. electric fans and their temp switches do you hear them coming on are they coming on at the right temp.

It is very important that the engine not overheat! The head can crack and this would be very bad.
I think your car is too new to need a new radiator.
Make sure the coolant level is correct.
Check the thermostat housing for leaks.
When the engine is hot, check if the fan clutch is locked up and actually driving the fan. Turn the engine off and grab the fan and try to turn it. It should turn stiffly. If it spins freely the fan clutch is dead.
It is possible that the water pump impeller has failed, especially if it is a plastic one.

Are you sure the Fan is turning to cool the Engine? If it is not coming on to cool Engine Check the Rad. cooling fan relay.

Sounds like a cooling fan are not turning on. Assuming you have an electric cooling fan. It could be something simple like a fuse or a relay which is stopping the fans from working, or it could be something as bad as the motor burning out on the fan.

BMW overheating


many things could cause the overheating. broken water pump impeller, stuck thermostat, clogged radiator, inoperative cooling fan on the radiator.

i would first check to see if the cooling fan on the radiator is working. when it reaches operating temp (or surpasses it in your case), see if the fan attached to the radiator kicks on. if its not on, then either the fan has failed or the temp relay to kick on the fan has failed. also, make sure the connector is plugged in.

after its at operating temp, turn off the car and feel the radiator. if you feel cool spots, then it is clogged and needs replacing.

wile under the hood and car is off, feel the upper & lower radiator hoses. if one is hot and the other is cool, then either the water pump (actually the impeller on it) has failed and is not circulating coolant through the radiator. a common problem in this model.

but it could also be the thermostat. if failed, it would not allow coolant to flow & circulate.

hopefull one of the above items is the problem. good luck.

there could be several resons for the overheating:


1. water pump doesn't circulate properly

2. Bad thermostst

3. fan clutch/radiator fan are non operative

4. relay is bad

5. clogged system

6. clogged radiator

to check on the the specific problem first power wash the radiator to remove bugs and road grime. they block the air from flowing over the fins and coil of the radiator thus not allowing the heat to disapate from the coolant. next install the good thermostat and make sure the spring part of the thermostat is facing down.next fill the radiator with coolant all the way up to the neck of the radiator and leave the cap off. next turn your heat setting to max fan and max heat temp. start the vehicle let the vehicle heat up and keep watch for the the flow of coolant soon as it goes down you should feel the upper radiator hose get real hot this indicates that the thermostat is working. now if you have a fan clutch for a conventional rear drive vehicle once the temp reaches 180 degrees the fan should no longer free spin it should start spinning faster if it is working like it should. if you have a transverse mounted engine for front wheel drive you will have a fan unit mounted to the radiator. these should be spinning when the engine reaches temp of 180 degrees. If they are not open the junction box and located the fan relay. switch out the relay with another one( I use the a/c clutch relay)if the fans kick on it's the relay that is bad, if it doesn't then either it's the fan unit itself or the temp sensor on the fan unit.now after you have done all these checks and everything is in order check the hoses going to the heater core at the fire wall they should be hot to the touch if they are not you have a clog at the by-pass of the water pump or manifold inlet.if the hoses are hot and you still have no heat then it's a bad valve inside the cab near the heatercore or a defective climate control module. check the fuse first to see that it is good.after the engine has been running a while the level of coolant should have gone down and then refill to proper level and replace cap after all of this if you still don't have heat and it overheats you have a bad water pump.... please rate this thanks
