Question about 1996 Dodge Neon

1 Answer

Cuts off in warm weather after about 10 miles

1996 neon, will cut off after its warmed up and only in warm to hot weather. It will restart after about 30 seconds to a minute and maybe or maybe not cut off again. It seems to only do it in warmer weather during daylight hours. It does not do it at night, already replaced plugs and wires are not that old and look fine. I heard a worn out timing belt or tensioner could cause this to happen or maybe even the coil pack. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the advice, I was thinking it might be fuel but I don't get any fault codes unless it cuts off 3 or 4 time in a row or if it skips enough times. Then the faults are for misfire and the battery being disconnected in 50 starts. the local tool supply house had a fuel pressure gauge on sale so i think i may get it and check it out. But normally i get no faults at all. Thanks again for the advice. I will try anything once.

Thanks for the advice. I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge and it was 50 psi in the morning and in the heat of the afternoon. Even when it cut off and started back up 30 seconds later, it was 50 psi, so I think my fuel pump is ok. I think it might be something under the hood, possible the ignition coil, or something, I just don't know because I don't get any fault codes most of the time. I hate to go on a blind spree of replacing parts, it's kind of expensive. I look forward to any other advice you might have. Thanks againg for your help!!!

Don't rule out fuel pump. Had a 95 do the same, ran great when cool in morning then when it got hot in afternoon, it would quit. Wait 15-20 minutes & go again, sometimes got me home, other times a few more miles until it cooled down again. Luckily I had access to a fuel pressure gauge. Cool in morning had 49 psi, when it quit, 2 psi. Wait 20 minutes, 49 psi again. If you can drive it around until it starts to act up then run into a repair shop for fuel pressure test it will confirm it. If not, they may need it all day to monitor the fuel pressure & confirm it is pump. If your a gambler, change it & fuel filter. One thing I did get was trouble codes indicating a lean mixture, due to starving for fuel. Have you cycled your key to retrieve any codes yet?

I attached it in morning while cool & got 49-50 psi, which is normal.
When it died, late afternoon, nice & hot, I pulled it in to a safe spot & threw the gauge on it again, and as I said, it was reading about 2 psi. Let it sit until it came back up, about 20 minutes later, and I took off for home. Every time it died, just waited & would fire up & go a ways again. Pump gets hot, it dies, pump cools down, it pumps again for a while. A little hint, if you park in the shade when it's hot out, you'll probably get further before it dies. Don't forget if/when it is confirmed the pump is at fault, run it until gas tank is low on fuel to make it easier on yourself. If I'm not mistaken, passenger side rear wheel off, gives you access to change pump. May have to lower straps, on 96' . Also I think the 96 was lower operating pressure so don't get fooled by the 49psi I had on the 95, I believe the 96 operates at 29 psi. Good Luck, keep me posted.

I guess the next test would be when it quits, to test for spark, then you can narrow it down from there. Sorry, but I'm not one to guess with someone else's money either.

After I drive my jeep some, if it is somewhat warm or not cold weather, my jeep has a hard time starting. It may crank but run a little ways and cut off going down the road.I have had the coil, plugs, plug...

if it shuts off after running for a while and will not restart for about 10 min,a bad crank sensor will cause this. abad crank sensor will make car shut off and not restart for about 10 min. put a scanner on to make sure. a check engine light does not allways come on. if you do not have a scanner, any auto parts store will scan it for free.

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee is blowing cold air for the first 30 minutes of my ride home (20-degree weather), then warms up slightly but never gets hot -- i'm guessing heater core (it has 200k+ miles)

It is most likely a thermostat. As your car gets older the thermostat begins to lose its spring like properties and stays open all the time causing your car to never warm up.

If you can't tackle right away, start your car in the morning and let it run for about 15 minutes to warm up. Be sure to turn the heat on full blast and recirculate the air.

hmmm sounds like ignition module under distributor rotor button is opening up when it gets hot.after cool down will restart suggest you replace it , it's fairly inexpensive and they are very prone to heat related failure.
