How do you replace 2008 Mercedes Benz C300 belt tensioner


Use a 17mm socket on the knob on the front of the belt tensioner (kind of hidden below the pulley) to pull the tensioner to its end stop. You then want to put a 3 or 4 mm thick rod into the locking hole to keep the tensioner in place so you can get to the2 mounting bolts. Simply remove the bolts and install the new tensioner in the reverse order. I assume you are replacing both and not just the rod. Reason for breaking the rod comes down to one of two things to my knowledge.
First reason, someone tried to tension the belt and didn't release the locking bolt that holds the inner setting of the tensioner as the rod IS NOT MENT TO HOLD THE TENSION. That bolt is a 10mm hex key bolt.
Second reason, rubber from tensioner has let go and shifted so that inner shaft sits to close to tension rod bracket on such an angle that it snaps of.

Removal...
Loosen 10mm hex key tension bolt at front of tensioner and remove belt. Once the belt is off, remove water pump pulley. Powerstering pump also needs to be unbolted so that you can move it somewhat to the right. you should be able to see several bolts holding the bracket that the locking bolt goes through. In addition there is a shockabsorber on the tensioner that is attached to the engine. once all them are undone/removed you should be able to remove the tensioner. The locking bolt is the longest and it lets you line everything up on reassembly. BUT DO NOT FULLY TIGHTEN UNTIL YOU HAVE TENSIONED THE BELT WITH THE ROD. Once you have tensioned it with the rod, tighten the locking bolt and just slightly undo the tension rod to take the stress of the thread. Remember the tension is held by the pressure of the lockingbolt against the inner steeltube of your tension assembly NOT THE ROD. If you are unsure of your steps for reassembly, take pictures with your phone step by step of the removal so you can check where goes what by the pictures.

Headlights will work on bright but not on dim. Tail lights will work regardless if one has it on bright or dim. Daytime driving lights work. The problems must be in the light switch on the left side of...


you could have a dimmer switch problem that may need an adjustment or replacement.do you hear the switch click when you try to change from high to low,if not than these could be the problem.the switch is located on the top of the steering colume and the base of the colume under the dash.if you work the dimmer switch on the colume and put your hand on the colume under the dash you should be able to feel the rod that pushes on the switch.follow the rod down and it will go to the dimmer switch.there are 2 5/16 bolts that hold it in place that if you loosen them and push the switch up towards the steering wheel it will move it so the rod won`t have to move as far to change from low to high.if this is not the problem and you don`t hear a click then its usually a switch replacement.

How do you release the tensioner to fit new timing belt


First thing to do is remove the idler pulley, then remove the tensioner if it is still hard to remove the belt. It should slip on freely. If it has a mechanical tensioner, you will have to put it in a vise and gently compress the rod back into the tensioner. You will notice a small hole in the rod, and the housing of the tensioner. Take a thin metal paper clip, and inser the wire into the hole while it is compressed. Then remove from the vice. Install the tensioner, then the belt, and lastly the idler pully. Make sure the timing marks are lined up as this is an interferance motor. Remove the paper clip.

PARKING BRAKE NOTE: Tensioner adjustment is only necessary when the tensioner, or a cable has been replaced or disconnected for service. When adjustment is necessary, perform adjustment only as described in the following procedure. This is necessary to avoid faulty park brake operation.
  1. Raise vehicle.
  2. Fully back off cable tensioner adjusting nut at equalizer to create slack in cables.
  3. Remove rear wheel/tire assemblies. Remove brake calipers and rotors.
  4. Verify park brakes are in good condition and operating properly.
  5. Verify park brake cables operate freely and are not binding, or seized.
  6. Check park brake shoe adjustment.
  7. Reinstall rotors and make sure rotors turn freely.
  8. Reinstall brake calipers. Tighten guide pin bolts to 41 n·m (30 ft.lbs.)
  9. Reinstall wheel/tire assemblies after brake shoe adjustment is complete.
  10. Lower vehicle enough for access to park brake foot pedal. Fully apply park brakes
NOTE: Leave park brakes applied until adjustment is complete.
  1. Raise vehicle again.
  2. Mark tensioner rod 6.35 mm (1/4 in.) from edge of tensioner bracket Adjustment Mark On Cable Tensioner Rod
  3. Tighten adjusting nut at equalizer until mark on tensioner rod moves into alignment with tensioner bracket
CAUTION: Do not loosen, or tighten the tensioner adjusting nut for any reason after completing adjustment.
  1. Lower vehicle until rear wheels are 15-20 cm (6-8 in.) off shop floor.
  2. Release park brake foot pedal and verify that rear wheels rotate freely without drag. Verify pedal returns to fully released position.
  3. Lower the vehicle

I know this is probably not gonna help you but maybe someone in the future. I know the manual says you tighten the compression rod with the full weight of the vehicle on the wheel. So make sure he didn't install it and tighten up while jacked up.
