Question about 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Engine will not stay running for more than 5 seconds

I have a 96 siverado with a 350 throttle body and spider injection system. About a month ago it died at work and would not start. I replaced my fuel filter and it ran til I got it home. It would not start again. I had replaced the fuel pump 3 months ago. I got a pressure gauge and checked the fuel pressure, it was 62psi. I talked to several people and looked on line and everything pointed to the regulator. So I changed it. Still would not start. I checked it a couple of more times and pulled the injectors out and cleaned around the tips. I noted which injector went where and put them back. Still no go. I replaced the crank sensor today and a mechanic told me to spray carb cleaner in throttle body to see if it would start. It ran for about 5 seconds then quit. I rechecked my pressure and it got to 58psi and when I turned off the pump it dropped to 5 psi in about 10 seconds. I started to take off manifold again to recheck the regulator but thought someone might have a different idea before I do that again. Could it be the evap canister purge solenoid? I checked voltage at the connector.

Check the filter again.. see if you can blow thru it.. if not replace it.. auto shutoff relay may be bad also..

Since the PCM uses info gatheres from the crank and cam sensors to calculate ignition - and there are no OBD codes - in all likelihood, the PCM itself is bad.

The Ignition Module, also transmits to the PCM.

It appears after all your testing - that the PCM is at fault.

It does not error report on itself (unfortunately).

The ignition timing is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). No adjustment is necessary (distributorless ignition) or possible.

The engines covered by this manual are equipped with distributorless ignitions, ignition timing is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), as applicable. No adjustments are possible. If ignition timing is not within specification, there is a fault in the engine control system. Diagnose and repair the problem as necessary.
Ignition timing is the measurement, in degrees of crankshaft rotation, of the point at which the spark plugs fire in each of the cylinders. It is measured in degrees before or after Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.
Ideally, the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder will be ignited by the spark plug just as the piston passes TDC of the compression stroke. If this happens, the piston will be at the beginning of the power stroke just as the compressed and ignited air/fuel mixture forces the piston down and turns the crankshaft. Because it takes a fraction of a second for the spark plug to ignite the mixture in the cylinder, the spark plug must fire a little before the piston reaches TDC. Otherwise, the mixture will not be completely ignited as the piston passes TDC and the full power of the explosion will not be used by the engine.
The timing measurement is given in degrees of crankshaft rotation before the piston reaches TDC (BTDC). If the setting for the ignition timing is 10 BTDC, each spark plug must fire 10 degrees before each piston reaches TDC. This only holds true, however, when the engine is at idle speed. The combustion process must be complete by 23° ATDC to maintain proper engine performance, fuel mileage, and low emissions.
As the engine speed increases, the pistons go faster. The spark plugs have to ignite the fuel even sooner if it is to be completely ignited when the piston reaches TDC. Spark timing changes are accomplished electronically by the engine and ignition control computers.
If the ignition is set too far advanced (BTDC), the ignition and expansion of the fuel in the cylinder will occur too soon and tend to force the piston down while it is still traveling up. This causes pre ignition or -knocking and pinging-. If the ignition spark is set too far retarded, or after TDC (ATDC), the piston will have already started on its way down when the fuel is ignited. The piston will be forced down for only a portion of its travel, resulting in poor engine performance and lack of power.
Timing marks or scales can be found on the rim of the crankshaft pulley and the timing cover. The marks on the pulley correspond to the position of the piston in the No. 1 cylinder. A stroboscopic (dynamic) timing light is hooked onto the No. 1 cylinder spark plug wire (2.2L engine only, on the 2.4L engines, special adapters are needed) . Every time the spark plug fires, the timing light flashes. By aiming the light at the timing marks while the engine is running, the exact position of the piston within the cylinder can be easily read (the flash of light makes the mark on the pulley appear to be standing still). Proper timing is indicated when the mark and scale are in specified alignment.


WARNING When checking timing with the engine running, take care not to get the timing light wires tangled in the fan blades and/or drive belts.

Just for the record, thats the throttle body.
Have you checked to see if the injector is opening ?
If it is a vortec engine, is fuel pressure at least 65psi ?

My Chevy 2500 p/u will only start and run when I pour gas in the carb...if I kill it for 2 minutes , I have to do it again to get it started ...uhg..frustrating !!! One guy told me it was a spider sumthing...


Lets start with terminology. I am assuming the truck is newer than 1987 so you would have fuel injection. No carb.
If it is a vortec engine, either a 4.3 or larger, and built after 1993, it could have central port fuel injection. That style uses one injector and a spider of lines that go to each intake port. This is inside the upper intake manifold.
Vortec engines require more fuel pressure than engines with port fuel injection or throttle body injection. So the first thing you need to do is check base fuel pressure before and after you crank the engine. You'll need a pressure gauge to do it. Normal fuel pressure at idle for a port injected engine is 35psi and 60psi for a central pfi system.

if there is a throttle body injection, one of the injectors may b stiaying open( exxes fuel in cyl)

1990 chevy blazer 350 ci throttle body fuel injected . the motor is flooding out u can see the injectors keep dumping fuel into the throttle body


Sounds like you have an injector leaking. Have someone just cycle the key on and off to run the fuel pump but don't crank the engine. If you see fuel dripping from the injectors, unbolt the injector cover on the throttle body, remove the injectors and replace the orings around the injectors.

Truck runs for two seconds an shut down i changed fuel pump an filter and it still shuts down but it only stay running when i put gas down in the throttle body i had a 1996 chevy 1500 i was wondering can...


No, the fuel regulator from a 96 will not fit a 98. The 98 is a vortec and i believe the 96 is TBI. You are on the right track though, but the fuel regulator is attached to the fuel injector spider and is one unit inside the upper intake. It is relative easy to replace just takes some time.

When i take the intake plenum off, there is fuel sitting in the left hand side(fuel press regulator side) 1995 chevy blazer. the fuel injection got replaced last summer and i replaced the regulator a month...


Wow, that's interesting, I'm trying to think how you could be getting gas in the oil. I'm guessing the gas on top of the motor is coming from a leaking O-ring. You maybe have a nick or tear in one of the O-rings in that area. It might only leak at certain temperatures with things expanding and contracting. Try wiggling some of the lines and fuel pressure regulator to see if you can make the leak a little more obvious. As far as gas in the oil the only thing that I can think of is leaky injector and the gas running down past the piston rings. I guess it could leak down past the intake manifold into the lifter valley but, I find that hard to believe. Good luck with that one, have a Happy New Year!!!

Silverado not starting unless prime


There is a check valve in the fuel pump that sounds like it may have gone bad. Check the fuel pressure at the shredder valve, there should be 60 to 65psi during the prime and will drop 5 psi when the engine is running. Once the fuel line is primed, check to see how fast you lose your prime. Since you replaced your injection system, we can eliminate the fuel pressure regulator leaking which was common on the injection system your truck run's on. If the fuel pressure drops fast then it's going to be a bad check valve at the fuel pump and it may be time to replace the fuel pump it self. Good luck and hope this helps. Note: do not try to start the engine with putting gas through the throttle body, it's been know for small fires to start and burn the spider injectors.

What are spider injectors and how much are they


The term "spider injectors" stems from the Vortec Series Engine's fuel injection system. Unlike fuel injectors that are installed individually commonly used in engines, this one piece molded plastic web body which all 6 or 8 injectors are permantly attached(94-96), when looked at resembles a look of a spider. est. cost $350-$450. In 97 on up, GM changed from the fixed injector (If one injector goes bad you need to change the whole or all injectors) to being able to individually change each injector. est cost $50-$150 ea.

Just a note, if this is an unaltered system, it should contain a sequential fuel injection system, which does not use a conventional throttle body. It uses a spider system instead, which is much different than the pre 1996 models.
