Engine will not idle, stalls at stop lights etc - EGR code

Posted by Jack Isuzu on May 20, 2009 1999 Rodeo LS, V6 3.2, 5spd,4WD - I seem to have a similar or same issue. Check Engine light is on, getting error code indicating EGR problem. I have replaced the EGR valve ($120), PCV valve ($6), Mass Airflow Sensor ($120), run fuel injector cleaner and fuel system treatment through all in the last month. Problem is intermittent but becoming more frequent and now the engine is beginning to hesitate on acceleration. Took my vehicle into a local Pep Boys shop. They proposed replacing the Mass Air Flow Sensor, Idle Air Control sensor, and 2 - O2 sensors for $1242. I decided to buy the parts myself for around $400. I've replaced the Mass Airflow with no change in symptoms. I'm suspicious the shop is just shooting in the dark and don't really know what the problem is.

Is a very slight leak oil leak in the intake manifold more likely to be the issue, or can it be a combination of all these items?

Code was P0401 - EGR: Insufficient flow detected.

I was just about to update on this as I have resolved the problem. It took almost 5 min to install, another 5 min for the engine computer to do what it does to adjust to the new part.

Keith you were dead on, it's the idle air control sensor and cost me $42.50. That's heck of lot better than $1242! Thanks for your help by the way. I should have tried this prior to taking my vehicle into those crooks at Pep Boys in Lakewood, CO.

Actually Auto Zone has the idle air control valve for $45.99 on their web site. I had a print out from there and just stopped back by the same Pep Boys that gave me the $1242 price just to see if they had the part and check the price. Pep Boys web site was down all day yesterday and the day before so I didn't check there. They had the part in stock and have a 5% price beating policy, so I got it for $42.50. I have my suspicions that Pep Boys web site might be down for pricing issues. Last week I bought an EGR valve there after they quoted me $171 at the parts counter. I went home and found it on their web site for $119.99 so they had to honor that price. The next day their web site was "page not found".

I'll definately be using this site going forward. I like doing my own repairs when it makes sense. Plus I'm laid off and need to save money anywhere I can. I have over 200k miles on this Rody which runs very well and is in good shape in spite of this problem. I'm sure I'll be doing more repairs.

    Thanks again. Problem fixed.

To me if the engine will not idel and stall once you have stopped, that points to an IAC (Idle Air Control sensor) which is located on your throttle body.  The part is very easy to get to and changes out pretty quickly.  Hope this helps.  Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa!

Yeah, if your going to take it to a mechanic I always prefer the little guy as opposed to the national ones.  Well I'm glad that it fixed it for you!  Where did you find the part for $42.50 though because I had looked it up for you at AutoZone and it was $100.99?  I need to shop where you do!  Next time you are having problems just post something on here and someone will be able to help you save some serious $$$!

Peppy boys are fairly good at oil changes. Go back to the egr valve and clean out the passageways that go to it.If they are blocked, changing the valve will do very little. Also check that no debris has gotten into the new valve. Intakes generally don't leak oil because no oil is in an intake. But, check it for air leaks by spraying parting line with carb cleaner while running. If you see a change in idle speed you have a vacuum leak there.Personally though I'd do the egr before anything else. (I'm wrong sometimes, but I'm not able to be there to give it a good check out (a bit frustrating at times)

Glad to hear it's fixed...I know it sounds like "me too", but if egr cleanout did not work that would have been my next suggestion. Good job Keith!!!

Code says bad egr valve replaced still throws code

V6? 4cyl? what is the code? there is no code that says "replace egr valve", the passages may be stopped up. open the egr valve manually (a scanner may be able to do thiis) and see if the engine idles rough or stalls out (it should if passages are flowing) if not you need to take valve off and clean the EGR passages. If you cant open the valve, take it off, one hole is exhaust. the other will be vaccuum, from the intake manifold. A bad map sensor could also cause a egr malfunction code.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
