Question about 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora

Engine Won't Idle

When I stop at a light or in traffic, my car, 1998 Aurora, will stall. It restarts with no problem. I have changed all plugs, wires, coil packs, and fuel filter. I do not get any codes or a Service Engine light. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Les Spangler

Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Hello, you may want a Chiltons or Haynes Repair Manual for this one. I would check that your idle speed is set correctly. I would try to run some fuel injector cleaner through your system becuase you may have dirty in your fuel injectors. This may be a bad or clogged catalytic converter. Your ignition timing may be off. Your EGR valve may be bad as well. I would check your distributor cap and button. Your distributor gears may be worn or rounded. There may be a vaccum leak. I would check the air filter as well. Thank you.

Engine Stall

I don't really agree with the IAC idle air control valve however, you can test it by unplugging it while the car is running; if the valve is bad (assuming no bad wires or pcm problems) the engine will not change it's sound. On the other hand if it's good the engine will sputter and have an erratic idle but probably wont die...........
A common culprit of your cars condition is often a bad crank shaft or cam shaft position sensor; for most vehicles they are easy to change and only $10 or so. There are tests that can be done to check the parts and that another topic. The crank shaft position sensor is where I would start. And, as another person said the fuel filter is a good thing to replace; could be your problem, and it probably needs it anyway. Good luck and try and keep from throwing parts at her; work the problem don't let it work you.

Engine dies at traffic light

Possible the previous owner had no concern for maintenance, never good to find that.
Scan for trouble codes as a first step-many parts stores will do engine scans for free. If codes are present attend to that first. Fuel pumps can fail in this way and not work again until cooled down. So you should have the fuel pressure tested. The best time to check it is when the engine stalls and won't restart. If pressure is low then (or anytime) then you would need a new pump. Pressure can be tested without running the car, just the ignition has to be on. Another test to do when it won't start is to check for spark on a plug wire. If no spark, suspect the crank position sensor. The PCM requires a signal from this sensor to know when to initiate spark. If sensor fails when hot, ignition spark won't occur. Could also be your ignition module, however. They also exhibit similar symptoms. And same for the coils-so check for spark on more than one plug wire.
Good idea to clean your throttle body. Use CRC intake cleaner spray and a toothbrush to clean old varnish and gum deposits around the throttle valve and inside the bore as far as you can reach. Also take off and clean the idle control valve or motor.
They get dirty and affect idle. You might want to have your throttle position sensor tested. Try unplugging the mass airflow sensor and see if car will start-if it does, that sensor may be at fault-when unplugged, the computer uses a default setting for measuring air flow into the intake.
Now is the time for a tune-up anyway, so buy new spark plugs and check your spark plug wires for brittleness, cracking, old age-if in doubt, check plug wire resistance or buy a new set of plug wires. Check or replace your air filter and fuel filter. How dirty is your oil? Clean oil always helps an engine run better.
I hope you find the problem, just keep at it. Especially check for spark and fuel when the car stalls and won't restart. And be sure to check for trouble codes-if there are any, it will probably point you in the right direction.
Good luck, Josh.

sounds like EGR valve and sensor this controls idle speed when at a stop. the po171 is a burn lean or rich code need to know what bank 1 or 2. also check for a vacuum leak from one of the hoses.
