Question about 2000 Mercury Cougar

Engine not turning...

Everything inside seems to be working properly, plugs have been changed, battery is good...thinking it may be the relay switch. Where is it located??

Ford f250 superduty 2008. Stuck in 4low. We can change it manaully. Motor good. Relays good. Everything good. but just wont switch over.

I can give you 2 more things to try. The turn knob is perhaps cracked on the backside of the knob. Knobs like this are similar to the heater control knob. When cracked, they spin around the shaft without turning it. You can sometimes get them to bite onto the shaft 1 way and slip when turned the other way. Pry off the knob and check.

Electronic shift solenoid type transfer units work off of 1 wire with variable voltage moving the shift solenoid to different lengths inside the transfer case. If the selector light on the shift switch burns out, it can throw off the shift solenoid from moving to the proper position. Removing the electric plug at the transfer case and placing a voltmeter on it, you would have a helper turn the transfer switch to its different positions and measure the electric values. They should progressively match each selector position.

No Turning of the engine: Starter tested~Good, Battery Tested~Good, Changed the Park/Neutral Switch, but still no response. When I turn the key, I get all the lights and sounds, but the motor will not even...

Change the actual ignition switch? Test light at starter signal wire while someone turns key to see if you have power at signal wire. Check all your grounds after that. Still nothing take steering column apart and change ignition switch .

Engine will not turn over. lights, horn, everything else works, no clicks, no nothing, but it will not turn over.

You're describing a no rotation issue and not a no start issue correct? If you dont hear/feel the starter relay clicking, it eliminates everything in the circuit to that point meaning the ignition switch, Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) (you don't have a neutral start switch unless you have a rare manual transmission), ground input from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the starter relay coil, and starter relay are good. Based on what you've said that leaves the primary battery cable from the battery to the starter, and the wire from the starter relay to the starter solenoid contact on the starter. Have you checked their continuity? One more voltage to check at contact 30 (input volts from battery to starter relay contacts) on the starter relay socket. Should see 12vdc all the time.

You should check the battery. The true test is a load test. Does jumping the battery using jumper cables make any difference? If it starts, change the battery. I take it to check the starter you jumpered the solenoid contact on the starter to the battery correct? Have you tried wiggling the battery cables as you turn the key? They can corrode and fail internally. Are the engine and chassy ground connections clean and tight?

Engine wont turn over

I dig the VW... good choice of car. Since you changed the battery, you may consider checking the terminals again. You may not have tightened them sufficiently. Lights and radios use a very small amount of power, but the starter uses several hundred amps. Any poor connection will result in a dramatic reduction in voltage and amps for the starter. Check those connections and tighten them down. If you have a terminal cleaner, clean both terminals again. They have a wire brush on two ends and cost about $5 at the local auto parts store. On Volkswagen, the starter solenoid is located inside the starter and is not servicable. If this is failing you will need a new starter (about $250 installed). Also, VW have a starter relay on the relay panel. I have never personally seen one of these fail on a latemodel VW, but I wouldn't rule it out. Some aftermarket batteries have smaller posts than the OEM posts... this could also be the cause for the bad connection. The bolt may be tightened all the way, but it's still not gripping enough. If that's the cause, back the bolt out all the way. GENTLY, hammer the terminals onto the battery as far as they will go, then replace the bolt and tighten with tools. Anyway, your symptoms point to bad connection on the terminals and your recent battery replacement kind of confirms this. Good luck.

My problem is with the AC on my 91 Civic Wagon. It suddenly became inop after an engine change. Wiring seems to be good along with relays. My problem is there is no ground on the clutch relay to actuate...

changing or swapping engine should have no effect on ac unit if you have everything plug back in correctly. I replace my engine also and plug everything back in with no problems. when you press the ac button does it light up? if not than you have no power to the switch and to clutch/compressor. take a meter tester to see if any power going to the compressor when the ac button is on position and also to the ac button. if not check your relay see if its good and test the plug where the relay plug in to see if any current flow though it. I suggest to pick up Chilton manual repair book from auto zone or pep boys for schematic.

1999 XJ Cherokee will not start.

How old is your battery?
Try changing it or charge your battery. At Wal-Mart a new battery is around $50-$60 for a jeep. just look and see how many cca's you need. I think my jeep is 525cca's.

Won't start. Battery has full charge and fuses good

You have a switch onthe side of your trans..that lets your ecm know when you are in P or N., Or possible starter.
