Was running wonderful when parked yesterday. Now has error message that reads "Gearbox Fault". All dash lights working, firing sequence is disabled, will not start using remote starter.

Justin, I have an automatic trans, 2003 Jaguar xtype. I was running wonderful when parked. The next day it would not start/turnover due to fault display readout which says gearbox failure. I attempted to start by using remote starter but aparently the fault has run inhibited. I am sure that there is nothing wrong with the transmission. Can you please advise me on the best way to bypass or jumper (or the location of the sensor to be changed out) in order to move the vehicle as it is stranded. I recently lost my job like many other people, so taking it to the dealer is out of the question for now. (the dealer is a 3.5 hr. drive from here). I have much industrial electronics experience, so I know what is going on with electron flow. I am stuck Please help. Thanks! Bruce

It must be having automatic gears. It seems as if the gear teeth have got jammed up and the sensor automatically switched off the engine to prevent further damage. Also check quantity of the gear box. Anyway only a proper mechanic will be able to release the tangle, if any, but my sixth sense seems as if the parking sensor has malfunctioned therefore not releasing the safety feature of driving and thus not responding to the remote starter..........sodeep

You must have the dealer scan the system with a special tool and based on what is read with the scanner diagnose the problem.

GEARBOX FAULT MESSAGE for jaguar s 2001

Replace transmission and sell quickly. I bought 2001 s-type in October 2008. I have not been able to drive it. 1st thing was gearbox fault message which turned out to be transmission. Ford can rebuild cheaper. Next thing to happen was all seals needed replacing. Then all coils needed to be replaced. Coils keep going out. Needs new computer which has 8 year/80000 mile warranty on, but Jag would not honor ($3000). Needless to say my pretty jag sits in the driveway. Had to get another car. Went with Lincoln LS V8. GREAT car!

Engine light flashing

The most common problem for a misfire and a flashing check engine light is the ignition coi on plug.
Each spark plug has its own coil pack. With a coil pack failing it will also cause a airflow code as the car will start to run rich. With the vehicle misfiring it can also inhibit the Cruise control but it will not necessarily bring on a gearbox fault. The most common cause of the gearbox fault light coming on as you describe is usually a weak battery.
I would replace the coil pack and have the battery tested.
Thanks and good luck
