My 1998 GMC Jimmy Is also stuck in 4WD Lo. Checked the actuator under battery tray, it has a continous vacuum to it, and it releases when I disconnect the vacuum. Followed this vacuum line to a switch (ball type). Removed the switch, checked it with a VOM for continuity, it's good. All fuses (driver's side door) are good. Disconnected the battery for hours, nothing changed. It would be great to have electrical, and vacuum diagrams/specifications for this system.

If its a push button 4x4 take it to the shop its a VERY COMMON Problem dealing with the electric.Once you pay the $400 to get it fixed get rid of the truck and settle for a Jimmy/Blazer/Bravada with a floor shift 4x4..GM had problems with the push button 4x4.DONT DRIVE YOUR TRUCK IN THE MEANTIME.YOU WILL BLOW YOUR TRANSFER CASE RIGHT OUT OF IT!

4x4 push button is not working about how much does

This is something you can do yourself if you have ever worked on a vehicle before. The part you need is called a front drive actuator valve. It costs about $ 50.00, GM part # 15165891.
Here is some more infor about it:

Main 4wd Components:
TCCM
- Transfer Case Control Module - Located behind the glove box. This is the electronic 'brains' behind the shifting.
Switch - The push button switch in the dash - driver input/indicator.
Encoder Motor - Located on the transfer case - This is what actually shifts the transfer case, and tells the TCCM what position it is in.
Vacuum Switch - Also located on the transfer case - This is what sends vacuum to the vacuum actuator (see below) when the transfer care is in 4HI or 4LO.
Vacuum Actuator - Located under the battery tray - This is what engages or disengages the front driveshaft.
Front Axle Switch - Located on the front axle - This is what tells the TCCM when the front axle is engaged.

If you want to try and replace it yourself, please let me know how it goes.

I have a 1998 GMC jimmy the motor on the transfer case for putting it in to 4x4 needs to be replaced is there anything I need to know to replace it

yes
the gears inside the motor strip out because the
clutch pack inside the transfer case are hanging up
do to wear
so be carefull
you may damage the gears in the new motor
the way you can tell is to take apart the old transfer case motor and look and see if the 4 small gears are
chewed up

4WD LO will not disengage what can cause this.

@ 2000 gmc: Exactly right.

asker: Also, it helps if you're rolling at about 2 mph with the steering wheels straight.
You cannot shift into 4LO with the wheels turned or when in a drive
gear. Also, it may be that you need the electric shift unit serviced.
It is not recommended to drive on dry pavement while in 4LO.

my 99 jimmy shifts into 4lo all the time.
1. Turn truck off
2. set parking brake
3. start truck and shift into neutral
4. push 2hi button(should shift back)
put back in park,release brake
might work for you

HOW DO I PUT A 1998 GMC JIMMY IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE?, DO I HAVE BE IN "PARK" OR CAN I CHANGE IT INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE WHILE IM DRIVING?

You should be able to put in 4x4 while in drive less than 35mph. Mine had a switch to turn to engage or dis-engage.

My truck is stuck in 4LO and it won't come out of 4LO.

Likely either a shifter position sensor, transmission position sensor, or a differential position sensor. Had same issue w/ my Montero and it ended up being one of the 5 sensors on the transfer case. It was pretty tough to get to, so replaced all 5. That fixed it.

Look in your fuse box for the bcm fuse (body control module) and remove the fuse atleast for a mint and then start the vehicle, put it in neutral and disengage the 4L and you are done once it is disengaged turn the vehicle off and re-insta the fuse yo pulled out and you should have no problem.
