SOURCE: rear hatch stuck
Emergency trunk release if you need it open now. from there you could try to fix the problem or take it to your dealer, you may still be under warranty 1. Remove trim plug to expose the access hole in the trim panel. The access hole is located on the inside of the liftgate. 2. Use a tool (flathead screwdriver) to reach through the access hole in the trim panel. 3. Pry the left release lever up to the unlock position. Pry the right release lever up to unlatch the liftgate. 4. Reattatch the trim plug. this information can be found on page 2-13 of your owners manual

SOURCE: HHR back hatch problem
There is a small hook on the right(driver side) of the latch that you can push with a screwdriver (it is hard to see you have to poke around a little)after you take the panel plug out of the rear door cover.I have the same problem I found that that the coil has become week and it does not have enough power to push the lath open. GOOD LUCK email@example.com

I have the same problem, when I took the door apart I found that there is a plastic extension on the end of cyclinder that moves in and out on that electric motor you hear. Well the plastic extension is broken off and that is what moves the lever to open your window latch. I tryed Krazy Glue with JB weld to fix the plastic piece but the first release of the window it just broke off again so I'll have to order a new one. You can't just order the plastic extension according to Chevy you have to order the motor aswell about $80.00 CAD.
To get the door apart yourself, I just pulled out on the plastic trim on top enough to get a long narrow screw driver down there and you will see a brass like lever in the shape of a L , you want to push that to the left to release the window latch, and then you can unscrew the plastic trim properly and go from there.

SOURCE: Can't open back hatch.
it sounds like maybe somthing in the linkage system is disconnected might want to take a look inside use the repair manual to figure out how to take the back door panel off from the inside
repair manual should run you anywhere from $15 to $20 and helps with just about everything

It sounds like it just needs to be reinitialized. Turn your key to the on position with motor off and hold the up/full vent button down for at least 30 seconds or until your sunroof either clicks or goes to the full vent position. That should fix your problem.
