Question about 2002 Pontiac Grand Am

Cranks but wont start cold

I have a 2002 grand am gt. It was driving really rough on and off for a few months, the check engine light would come on sporatically but turn off, not related to how it was running. I went to have someone look at it and it wouldn't start. Now after replacing every sensor, the computer, the fuel pump, the fuel filter, the coil packs and checking and cleaning the injecters we have gotten nowhere. The car still wont start when it's cold without starter fluid but will start fine until it sits for over 4 hours. There's no issues with security lights or anything. What else is left?

This is a good example of why I always suggest that people do comprehensive testing before running out to buy lots of unnecessary parts. Get a manual and do some testing. Even though you have changed lots of stuff, you have missed something (possibly a relay or some relatively small part) good luck

I suggest you STOP useing starting fluid NOW,,,if not sooner.
Are there any current diagnostic trouble codes?
Is the theft or security light flashing on the instrument panel when you try to start the car? Is the cat converter restricted or plugged?
You replaced EVERY sensor includeing crank sensor? The ECM you installed, was it a new one or used?
Was the the Security Relearn Procedure performed after you installed it?
Fuel pressure regulator tested and operational per mfrs. specs? The ground on the coil packs clean and secure?
Give me some more information...i will try to help fixya.

Not just Pontiac...get the "pencilheads" out of the engineering departments and most of this stuff will work. Low quality and over-engineering simple stuff has affected all vehicles....take some time and browse through the problems on this site!!!

Pontiac grand am stalling

A lot of possible causes - have you checked for trouble codes (DTCs)? If no codes, given the age it could be in the fuel delivery system (for example, fuel pump stopping either due to an intermittent electrical problem at the ignition switch or in the wiring such as corroded connectors).

Hi! As a first course of action please have an oil change. The oil can be burnt which can cause the engine to shake during cold start ups. Experienced this myself and an oil change was a helpful idea. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Car wont start sometimes

Try having the entire fuel system inspected especially the pump and tank.

If it has been getting towed from the rear end and then it starts right up then that's a clue.
