Question about 2003 Ford Focus

1 Answer

Changed front left hub assembly on a Mercury Mountaineer 97 and now there is a loud noise when we drive forward but no noise when you back up. The noise was not there till the hub assem was changed also there is no noise when you turn the wheel to the right I think... One way or the other, there is no noise. When you drive faster the noise goes faster like something is not on right and hitting as you go.There seems to be nothing wrong with the axle. Brake light comes on.It is a loud noise like if you took a hammer and hit a piece of metal pipe really hard.

How should you add fluid to your transfer case in mercury montaineer

There is video on it

Noise doesn't have to come from transfer case

You have to find the noise

Transfer case fluid should have been changed along

When im driving about 20 miles per hour on the drivers front there is a vibration and grinding sound what could be this problem

Lots of things can do this. Check your front hub bearings by jacking up the vehicle and turning the tire by hand. Or if you are using a commercial lift, let the wheels rotate with the engine running and the trans in gear.

Last week one of my clients had a similar problem. On his SUV, he changed the left front hub to no effect. He then changed the right hub to no effect. The problem was the front U-joint on the front driveshaft of the 4x4. It sounded like a left side noise but was actually coming from the center of the SUV and it vibrated and felt like a left side vibration.

Since Hub bearings are known to fail, they are worth checking. You do have other moving parts in the front drivetrain. A grinding sound can also generate from the rear Emergency brakes, as the shoes inside the rotors rust, the linings fall off and get eaten by the moving parts. Its also possible to have a floating front brake pad. with the loose pad separated from the metal backing and skipping on the side of the rotor. There is not enough room for the pad to fall out completely.

I hope my solution helps you find your problem.

My 2003 mercury mountaineer ABS light is staying on. manually, the brakes work however they shimmy.changed the brake pads, checked the brake fluid and ABS fuse, bud when changing the pads, did now clean the...

I replaced the hub bearing assembly on drivers side twice and the light stayed on and the brakes worked fine. It was the wires (visible just above the tire on the frame) that rubbed against the frame that had shorted out. It was simply repaired and clip-stripped up out of the way. The light has been off every since then.

2x2 = nothing special since they are old fashion tapered bearings

4x4 = nothing special again BUT the wheel bearing is part of the hub assembly!

'03 Merc Mountaineer humming noise when turning

If same tires as before & air pressure set correctly, or as usual, a humming when swerving, or turning one way or the other or both, it's usually a pretty good indicator.
