2003 VW Jetta ''door open'' alarm goes off while driving

While driving my 2003 VW Jetta, the alarm and light signaling that a door remains open goes off intermittently. Also, if I turn my headlights on while this dinging is going off, the sound turns into a constant tone (as if I had left my headlights on after turning the car off). I was told at the dealership that this repair would cost 540.00, to replace the lock on the drivers side door. Ideally, I would like to simply disable the sound feature without replacing a lock/sensor that is otherwise working properly. Is this possible? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

The door latch located in the door panel has a micro switch built into it assembly. It is what detects an open door. A new latch is about $150. If you could find a shop to replace it for you. You could also try buying some plastic-safe contact cleaner/lubricant and spraying the latch assembly out and opening/closing the door a few times to work it in.

There is a button between the door/door jamb that senses whether the door is open or closed. That button can be replaced for a reasonable price.

Did you have an accident with this vehicle shortly before this happened ?
I have had this problem after my car was repaired by a body shop. One door latch was replaced by the VW dealer which solved the alarm problem but the battery still drained. Now they are saying it is the comfort control module.

My vw sharan locks itself after 30 seconds even though the doors are open- unless its the drivers door. it looks like it doesn't recogise that the doors have opened.

Right , here's your problem ,,, the door swiches are incorperated into the door locks and thats why your interior light does not come on, therefore the vehicle thinks the doors haven't opened, This will cause the alarm to recycle the door locking signal .

Go to your local junk or scrapyard and pull them yourself. The dealer charges an average of 90-100 dollars an hour. So a lot of the money they quoted you for was probably for labor

Open door alarm on VW Jetta

You probably have a bad microswitch in the door latch assembly. It lets the computer know if the doors are open or not.
